4k 240hz Monitor Support?

Hello all, I’m just getting started with openSUSE Tumbleweed and getting used to how everything works here. So far everything has been great, I’m excited to learn YaST as it seems like an awesome tool. The only problem I am encountering so far, which is admittedly not a deal breaker, is getting my monitor to run at its highest refresh rate.

My monitor is the AW3225QF which runs at 4k 240hz maximum. I am running it through an HDMI 2.1 port with the correct cable rated for this speed. I know that neither HDMI 2.1 nor DisplayPort 1.4 can natively support this resolution/framerate and must therefor use DSC or Display Stream Compression, but I was under the impression that this was handled by the monitor itself.

I am using a NVIDIA 4080 Super with the G06 drivers installed through the non-free repository in YaST, version 550.107.02. I have tried under a Wayland session and X11 session and encounter errors in both. X11 causes the monitor to stop detecting input and going to sleep, the option to switch back to previous settings never triggers and requires a hard reset. In a Wayland session, the screen stops detecting input but does switch back to previous settings and will come back after 15 seconds.

Anyone have any suggestions on solutions? Like I said its not a huge deal as I can still run at 120Hz refresh rate which is fast enough for me, but I more want to see if the issue if solvable. Note that my setup works at 4k240Hz under Windows and EndeavourOS so I know it is possible, just not sure what is stopping it on openSUSE.

Sorry I don’t have a solution or suggestion … this Reply is only a curiosity.

We have a 38" Dell curved I should check its specs.

What app(s) do you run that requires 4k, 240hz ?
Gaming apps? Video editing? etc?

Open or closed driver?

ILL this is Nvidia’s fault:

Thanks for the feedback. Understood, and we’re working on it. And to be clear: DSC is already supported, though DSC in combination with some of these extreme high pixel clock modes is what is missing. Hopefully we can deliver this soon. I apologize for the delays.

The support requested in this discussion is available in the 535.xx drivers. I’m going to go ahead and close this discussion thread. Please start new threads if there are specific problems with the functionality.

Try to use DP connection.

My use case would only be for gaming for this resolution/refresh rate. Only really comes into play for older titles as you would have to be able to push the games to actually run at framerates that high. So admittedly fairly niche use case.

I believe that I am on the closed driver. Installed using YaST method listed in: SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE Wiki.

Tried using DP which interestingly works with single monitor, but does not work with multiple monitors. I can Which I suppose works well enough for my use case as I would only be running the high refresh rate while gaming.

I wonder if installing the drivers “the hard way” here: SDB:NVIDIA the hard way - openSUSE Wiki would yield any different results. I also may try running my second monitor out of the iGPU on my Ryzen 7800X3D to see if that works.

Edit: Running main monitor on DP through nvidia GPU and secondary monitor out of AMD iGPU does solve the issue. Have not tried installing drivers the hard way.

To get more info create bug report at Nvidia’s site(s).

In the future you will use open driver as the only available.
