Did you configure it and control it with network manager? Assuming that the connection is valid, maybe it’s just a DNS issue.

  1. When connected, can you ping a site successfully by IP address? eg Google servers…
ping 8.8.8.8
ping 74.125.224.72
  1. Get the output of
grep -i name /etc/resolv.conf

Any name servers defined? If not, try

echo 8.8.8.8 > /etc/resolv.conf

*You’ll need root privileges for this one.

Any difference?

not that i can help you, but i think someone else can if you will please
show us the terminal output and input from

/sbin/ifconfig -a
ping <your-router-IP-address>
/sbin/route -n
ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup forums.opensuse.org
ip addr
ip route
ip -s link
grep '^^#]' /etc/resolv.conf

copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr

additionally, tell us which desktop environment you are using and which
method of setting up your networking you use (NetworkManager of ifup)

oh, and last: were you ever successful with (say) firefox and then it
changed to not working?

That is your conclusion from something you noticed. What did you notice/see to make you come to this conclusion?

And all the other info asked for above of course.

Some time ago I set up the MF100’s predecessor, an MF60, and I recall that it
wouldn’t play well with openSUSE until I made one single simple change in the
networkmanager settings for the connection. Unfortunately it was too long ago
for me to remember what that one change was, so I’ve posted screen shots of the
working setup in hopes that you find them useful.

SUSE Paste

We’ve found the MF60 to be a tremendously helpful item to have on this little
island where the DSL is often down for days at a time. When all we had was 2G
it had trouble holding a connection for more than 45 minutes or so, but now we
have 3G, and we recently used it continuously for a week+ after Hurricane Sandy
without any issues.
