Which application is used to make the modem work?

From a terminal, run the following:
tail -f /var/log/messages
Now, plug in the modem and post the messages here.
This worked for me with one model of 3G modem:
Wireless Broadband EVDO CDMA MM 5500SU usb modem in Suse 10.0, 10.1 - Bigpond
And later I had another one and used a slightly different setup for that one:
Wireless broadband in Suse/openSUSE for Bigpond Next G Network (HSDPA-enabled bp3-usb)
And this was for a 3G mobile phone used as a broadband modem:
Wireless HSDPA broadband in Suse/openSUSE Using Nokia 6120 Mobile Phone as Modem on Three Mobile Australia
The software and general method was the same for all three.
