Well, since /devttyUSB2 is present, I’m not sure why the network manager can’t detect a serial modem interface…

The storage device interfaces within this type of hardware are usually disabled by usb_modeswitch, so perhaps it is not aware of the particular chipset reported

Perhaps this thread is relevant
.

but it would depend on whether your ‘E173’ is using the same chipset as that described in the thread.

I also tried the solution from the link you gave, removed usb_modeswitch, this does not help.
Martin
The following output suggests that your modem is already active
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:1c05 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E173s 3G broadband stick (modem on)
Only a guess on my part, but perhaps its an issue with the modem manager. I have read some bug reports that suggest that there has been a regression with ModemManager’s handling of these devices, affecting those using ModemManager (version 0.6). I’m still using openSUSE 12.2, which has the 0.5.x.x version.
Read the following:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/modemmanager/+bug/1057186
I’ll leave you to research the others.
There is a suggestion that some have reported success by rolling back to ModemManager 0.5. It’s only a workaround, and you are best advised to submit an openSUSE bug report for this regression IMHO. Anyway, if you did want to try it, pull an earlier version directly from here (you may try installing the one that comes with openSUSE 12.2 for example, but don’t select the repo for inclusion, just the single package, and hopefully there won’t be any dependency issues):
I am trying to get this working, as you said, in 12,2 is version 0.5, and there the modem works well. For tumbleweed, it is just version 0.7
Ok, opensuse-servers seem to be a lit slow tonight, the 1-click install from 12.2-repo now is going on for half an hour, seems to be finished download and install right now.
I let u know
Martin
Does not work, even with ModemManager0.5 from opensuse 12.2
I do not understand this really, it works well with this modem E173 in opensuse12,2, I will check this with my ancient PCMCIA-Card in opensuse12.3.
There has been a lot of hassle with networkmanager during milestones and rc’s of OS12.3, I reported at that time some bugs, nothing went better?
With bad humor
Martin
I would stay with 12.2 for now.
I will check this with my ancient PCMCIA-Card in opensuse12.3.
Good idea.
Sorry, I can’t really assist further…
Thank you for your patience with a helpless matter
Martin.
I have the same problem.
No problem in LIVE from USB stick but after installation the mobile network doesn’t appear.
Please try this: open YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings and switch to “User Controlled with NetworkManager” on the “Global Options” tab.
