3.2.1 kernel update issues

since updating the opensuse 12.1 64 bit kernel from 3.1.0 to 3.2.1 from tumbleweed, the system has lost the internet connectivity (wired broadband connection), at the startup, lots of error messages are shown… like iptables not found and do you need to insmod etc. also, a message is displayed that ATI drivers need to be rebuilt against the kernel, but then, the internet connectivity has also been lost… it keeps waiting for the eth0 and then it also can’t be found. (i am able to login to the graphical screen though - normal as well as failsafe, but still, no internet with either)
Also, it seems kernel-desktop has been updated to 3.2.1 but the kernel-desktop-base is still 3.1.0. when i try to run zypper (without internet connectivity) and try updating the kernel-desktop-base to 3.2.1, zypper shows an inconsistency and recommends that desktop would be downgraded to 3.1.0. in other words, both kernel-desktop and kernel-desktop-base can’t be 3.2.1.

  1. how do i first regain internet connectivity (internet works if i login with another version of opensuse installed)?

  2. is it possible to upgrade to 3.2.1 or should i rollback to 3.1.0 or should i upgrade from some other repo and not from tumbleweed?

thank you for any help.

Sorry I don’t know the solution to your problem but I compiled my own 3.2.1 kernel with S.A.K.T & lost wireless connectivity too (I didn’t try wired) so rolled back to 3.1.0-1.2-desktop, so you are not alone.
Card-2: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 driver: iwlagn

thank you  went back to 3.1.0 and all is fine now…
though i wonder… has anyone tried upgrading to 3.2.1?

I’ve upgraded to 3.2.1 today - switched from 12.1 to Tumbleweed - I noticed that the brcmsmac module is missing - no wifi for my broadcom BCM43225.
I have to switch to the b43 driver although the connection stabilty of this driver is not very satisfying with my card.
Is this a bug or a feature? Is there an extra package for the staging drivers? Should I open a bug that the brcmsmac is missing?

do you realize that every time you move to a new kernel you are required
to self-generate things like a new ATI driver, a new wi-fi driver, a new
NIC driver, and etc…

maybe you didn’t read or understand this (from the front page of
Thunderbird) but you should understand now:

Due to the Linux kernel being updated very frequently, users who rely on
proprietary graphic drivers should not use the Tumbleweed repository
unless they are familiar with updating these drivers from source on
their own . . . If you don’t know how to compile your own additional
kernel modules and you don’t wish to learn or keep a very close eye on
what is being updated, please don’t use Tumbleweed. . . If you have 3rd
party kernel modules, Greg KH (the primary Tumbleweed maintainer)
STRONGLY suggests that you not use Tumbleweed. Seriously, it’s not worth
the pain and extra work, unless you really want to do it.

And if you do do it, then again, you are on your own, sorry.

no, read my just previous post…it is roll your own in TWeed.

There original post says they upgraded the kernel from tumbleweed, although I don’t get it as a kernel upgrade option. But I have upgraded to a few kernels in tumbleweed using S.A.K.C & kernel sources from kernel.org & never had a driver problem before.

brcmsmac is not a proprietary 3rd party driver like nvidia or ati - it was part of the staging driver in kernel-desktop-3.1.0-1.2.1. according to [PATCH 1/8]](http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.wireless.general/75638) brcmsmac is only enabled if bcma is disabled.
maybe I misunderstood the topic of this thread - I don’t know if I am using TWeed and have any problems I am on my own…

Kernel 3.2.2-5 is now available on Tumbleweed. I upgraded to that version since this morning and my wired connection has no issues. What is handling the broadband connection feb8born, network manager? For me i found it better to have ifup+smpppd+qinternet around to handle my internet connection.

Hey !! I added tumbleweed to my repos but how do i get latest kernel ?

Softwaremanagement - View repos - Select Tumbleweed repo - Click “Switch system packages …” on top right.

If you mean the kernel in the Tumbleweed repos, just run the standard upgrade command: zypper dup
