2 Things

Hi
I am introduced openSUSE 11.4 by a friend at a Linux Forum.
I am amazed by the Graphics and Gnome Desktop Environment.
It was easy to install and customise, despite the fact the I am a newbie.
However, I was forced to opt out because it did not help me to connect wireless networks.

Then when 12.1 came, I wanted to test out.
It was amazing, I got what I needed. Stable, Secure, Speedy and Easy to use Linux.

However, I have 2 things which eats my brain:

  1. I am unable to use the installed packages like - Gnu Cash, Uget, etc., - They are not at all working. I do not know what has happened to them
  2. I am unable to install and use Java Run Time Environment & Codecs

If you could help me in resolving these two I would be grateful

Yours
V. Narayanan

And one more thing: Who’s going to look inside a post with such a title and which information is going to make anyone think that he might have the answer?

i like that! you couldn’t get wifi to work but came back and tried
again–good on you.

as said, you are welcome here…but, in the future please put only one
problem in each new thread, and give each thread a descriptive
subject…that is so the helpers here can see what the thread is about
and don’t have to look in if they know they can not help…see, here
we all are volunteer users, helping other users…help me save my time
by giving a good subject, and i can help more…

impossible to tell what went wrong. perhaps the install went bad…how
did you install them? in openSUSE it is always best to install from
standard openSUSE repos using either YaST (in your main menu) Software
Management or zypper…for example, if i were to install GnuCash, i
would open YaST, and when it has initialized i would highlight (on the
left) “Software” and then on the right “Software Management”, then when
that second pane is initialized i would type GnuCash [careful! you typed
above “gnu cash” which YaST will fail to find, because it is one word!]
into the search blank, and then click the “Search” button…in a few
moments the pane on the right would populate and i would click “gnucash
Personal Finance Manager”…and, YaST would automatically select other
things i either must have or should have (like the Documentation!) and
then i would click the “Accept” button and WAIT for YaST to do all the
downloading, unpacking, and installing work…

then, when that was finished i would open the main menu and type into
the search block there “gnucash” and i’d expect to very soon see an icon
to click GnuCash to life…

is that what you did? if not, try it now…

> 2) I am unable to install and use Java Run Time Environment& Codecs

openSUSE 12.1 is default installed with openJDK, a free and open source
software implementation of Java which includes a Run Time Environment
and browser plug in…you can check to make sure it is installed by
opening YaST > Software Management, typing in java and see if you don’t
find it with checkmarks already in the boxes next to those packages…

now, if the open version is not working for you then you can install
SUN’s version…but, you need to start a new thread…or better yet,
search the forum for how to do that in openSUSE 12.1(with google is the
easiest, if you use the site specifier “site:forums.opensuse.org”
switch, like http://tinyurl.com/6pmglnj

do not put your private email address in your post here…everyone
should answer you here in the forum…that way, folks with the same
problem can use Google to find the problem and solution, and not have to
wait on a helper!

Dear NRD80V,

I have removed your e-mail address from your post because:

  1. We assume that you do not want your system swamped with spam by reveiling your e-mail address open on the internet! At least when you do not mind, we do not want to be instrumental in that.
  2. The discussion about your problem is to be held here, where everybody can see what the answers are. Thus when someone has the same problem he can see the whole discussion here. We are a community, thus keeping the answers to yourself is not very nice.

And please take note of what others said about one problem per thread and a good Title to that thread. Again this is to make that a discussion about a problem is easy to be followed by others having a similar problem when they read a thread later (e.g. by using Google), without the thread being obscured by all sorts of posts about another problem.

The good title is in your own interest. Very few people will think they are qualified to further studuy a thread called “Help” (to take another worthless title as an example). but people might think they have a good answer when they see “Java installation problems”.

And last I will try to let you offer much more information then “I am unable to use the installed packages like - Gnu Cash, Uget, etc., - They are not at all working.” Because that is only an intriductionar message and does not sayy anuthing about what you exactly do and see. It is especialy usefull to add a coomand and the computer output you get from a terminal session (and post those please between CODE tags: ( http://forums.opensuse.org/english/information-new-users/advanced-how-faq-read-only/451526-posting-code-tags-guide.html )I hope this helps in you rpoviding the information to the volunteer people here, to make it easier for them to help you.

It also appears in DenverD’s reply (!).

Thanks.

I have contemplated some more comments here, but I think better to stay silent :frowning:

and still twice in the nntp records!!

which none of the moderators will edit…and, they are at least as easy
to mine for addresses) as the http interface.

anyway, the days of scum spammers creeping the web looking for email
address is mostly over as they have far more efficient ways (called
windows viruses, worms, trojans, malware etc…which easily infect and
steal live addresses from 90%+ of the desktop users in the
universe…not to mention the large number of poorly protected
passwords–a friend of mine died two years ago, suddenly three months
ago his cracked yahoo account started spamming everyone in his yahoo
address book–why should they waste their time even look here?)
