2 monitors (xinerama) with NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200

Hi

On openSUSE 11.1 I was able to configure KDE 4 for 2 monitors with sax2 (although the resolution was bad).

On 11.2 neither SAX2 nor KRandR seem to work. The KDE User Guide says that a driver supporting version 1.2 is necessary. However the nvidia driver for eForce FX Go5200 seems to support only version 1.1.

Is there a way to use both monitors with SUSE 11.2? I am quite desperate since for my work using only 1 monitor is definitely a handicap.

If you installed the proprietary driver you could try to use tweenview. Worked for me.

That’s a reference to XRandR 1.2 which NVIDIA does (still, despite many promises) not support in their proprietary driver. As someone else pointed out, it does not matter a lot as you can use Twinview as long as you do not need to rotate one of the monitors. Just avoid Sax2, it’s useless with NVIDIA drivers and dual monitors, use nvidia-settings as root.

If you have the proprietary driver installed use the nVidia configuration
tool. Should be able to find it in the menu system under Applications.

Thank you so much, after some trial and error it works great!

Just a hint for other newbies: start nvidia-settings as root. Configuration TwinView works fine.

Yep. Otherwise it won’t write to /etc/X11…even still you sometimes have
to delete xorg.conf.backup when you try to make additional changes.
