2.6.27 kernel

Has anyone tried the 2.6.27 kernel yet? I tried it this morning but ran into graphics problems that I couldn’t fix.

I expected to boot into a console as I use the Nvidia driver, what I didn’t expect though was that when I attempted to install the Nvidia driver it wouldn’t compile (error message was - no screens found). First time that has ever failed on me since I started using an Nvidia card. It is nothing to do with kernel-sources btw because I had those installed for 2.6.27.

I then turned to sax2. It failed with the message “screens found but none have a useable configuration”.

I then turned to the ‘nv’ driver which produced a result but not a very pretty one since it would only draw a 1024x768 screen and my main monitor is 1280x1024.

I manually changed the resolutions in xorg.conf to 1280x1024 but it didn’t make any difference I still got 1024x768.

I finally gave up and downgraded to the 2.6.25 kernel which works just fine, I would have used the 2.6.26 version but yast said it couldn’t find it on the server.

I updated my 11.1 alpha 2 (KDE4.1) install yesterday evening and got:
linux-unvm 2.6.27-rc4-4-default #1 SMP 2008-08-26 19:12:39 +0200 x86_64

Everything I’ve tried is working 100%.

Are you using the SuSE kernel?

Well as I said, I have switched back to the -25 kernel now, but the one I tried to install was kernel-default 2.6.27-rc4.4-i586 from factory/inst-source.

It may or may not be significant, but today I have tried to install the same number kernel on a different distro and ran into virtually the same problems ie. the Nvidia driver would not compile against that kernel. In this case it gave a different reason (gcc not installed - but it is). Again the ‘nv’ driver worked (and in this case gave me the correct 1280x1024 screen size). I think it is probably to do with the Nvidia driver not being optimised for this kernel yet as it is so new.

This kernel leads to the following problems:

  1. A patch must be applied to paravirt.c in order to get the nvidia binary driver to compile the kernel module. Apparentlyo opensuse kernel folks haven’t applied this patch yet. See 177.67 and SUSEs KOTD linux-2.6.27-rc3-HEAD_20080818181649 - nV News Forums for more information.

  2. My usb keyboard is not recognized anymore since 2.6.27-rc4.4. In BIOS I enabled USB legacy support - if I disable it, keyboard runs but I have no usb keyboard support in grub >:(
