1GB memory disapeard

Hi!
I run OS11.1 w/ KDE4.2.2 on a Dell Latitude D830 with Nvidia Quadro NV140 Gfx-card with 512MB dedicated memory.

Now i put in 4GB RAM, but OpenSUSE only sees 2,9GB, so 1GB RAM disapeared. I run 32bits OS with PAE-kernel.
I know 32bits OS can’t see any memory over 4GB and WinXP use to cut it down to 3,5GB. I very sure OpenSUSE can see all memory, but some are reserved in some way.
BIOS see all memory!

What can i do to see all memory?

Mine did the same thing. Im running suse 11.1 kde4 and i have 4gigs ddr3 but it only reads 2.9. I don’t know whats up with that.

Hmm… same thing here. Except I’m running on a 32bit system and it’s reading 3.2 GB instead of 4GB.

For those of you on 32-bit systems this is fairly normal, though I’ve
never seen it as low as 2.x GB I guess I’ve never seen a machine with 700+
MB of Video RAM either. There is only so much memory addressing space for
all the RAM on the system and that includes the RAM for your video card.
If you want to see all of that RAM along with your system RAM (the full
four gigabytes) change to 64-bit.

Good luck.

3GB on my laptop 32bit PAE
shows 2.9GB

Any 32bits OS can address 4GB physic memory, but not more than 4GB. If you need more than 4GB memory, then you need 64bits OS. Windows XP can by tweeking address 4GB. As default it only detect 3,5GB. This because 512MB is been reserved to some HW-related need for RAM, but this restriction can be removed.

I’m very sure OpenSUSE and all other Linux-distro can see all 4GB RAM, but some is restricted in some way. That OS11.1 with PAE-kernel “delete” over 1GB memory is more what i was expecting. I am also running SLED11 64bits on another computer with 4GB memory, but it only sees 3,4GB. I guess some of the RAM is restricted to the Intel 945G GPU.
