15.4 Thunderbird 115.x is occasionally very slow

Since Leap 15.4 updated Thunderbird to v115 a few weeks ago, I’ve noticed that the app is noticeably sluggish when changing folders and a handful of times I’ve seen X11 go unresponsive for 7-8 seconds while the CPU spins at 100% after un-hiding the app. Thunderbird seems to be the only app that I regularly use that causes X to hang like this (I haven’t Firefox v116 behave like this though I admit that I don’t hide/unhide FF nearly as often as I hide/unhide TB)

Is anybody else seeing this behavior? I understand that starting with v115, TB switched the front-end to use pure HTML+CSS so perhaps that’s the reason for the sluggishness?

see thread i started. Thunderbird 115 freezes totally upon opening for a minute or two

Responders suggested to delete cache. I did that and no more freezes. Likely would help a slowdown problem. worth a try

@arcasinky:

Be careful with respect to “which cache” –

  • The Mozilla products hold things such as Bookmarks and Address Books in .json files in one or the other User Cache directories –
 > find .cache/mozilla/firefox/ -iname '*json*'
.cache/mozilla/firefox/ylpt2hv8.default-release/activity-stream.discovery_stream.json
 >
 > find .mozilla/firefox/ -iname '*bookmark*json*'

Golden Rule:

  • Before clearing out the Mozilla User Cache directories, backup your Bookmarks, Address Books, User Settings and, local e-Mail Folders … :cold_sweat:

Thunderbird has a configuration option to clear it’s cache, either manually or when closing the program. Also, there is a ~/.cache/thunderbird folder, separate from FF’s. The OP could try that first.

Thanks. In the past, I’d had Thunderbird configured to clear cache on shut-down but since it goes days or sometimes weeks between restarts, I guess it accumulates a large cache. I’ve started making a point to manually clear cache more frequently. We’ll see if it makes a difference. Thanks again.
