13.2 Nouveau GFX 960 not detecting ASUS VN279QLB monitor 1920x1080 resolution

Hi list,

New Supermicro 5038A-iL ‘Linux Workstation’ with GFX 960 and 13.2 x86_64 /Noveau doesn’t detect the DP/HDMI connected ASUS VN279QLB monitor and its native resolution 1920x1080 (which worked with an old workstation).

What to do when only default VESA 1024x764 is available and the monitors EDID is not detected?
I want to get default Nouveau working, before I possibly continue next with Nvidia’s proprietary driver.

System outputs:

‘gnome-control-center display’ tell ‘Unknown monitor’
and has only 1024x764 (4:3) and 800x600 (4:3) on the resolution menu

Gnome CC Details tells: VESA: GM206 Board

Looks like nouveau doesn’t support your card at all, I’d say. Therefore vesa or fbdev is used which apparently doesn’t recognize/support your monitor’s resolution.

Personally, I would not bother with nouveau and just install the nvidia driver instead.
For the GTX 960 you need the new G04 driver (version 346.xx) though, G03 (340.xx) and lower do not support it either.

So add the nvidia repo in YaST->Software Repositories->Add->Community Repositories if you haven’t added it already, and install the package x11-video-nvidiaG04.
