13.2 kde problem

Hi, I’m a newbie to linux, I installed suse 13.2 , the install went fine and completed, upon reboot of system it hangs at the Kde as it starts up when it shows the hard drive and mouse freezes as well, is there a fix for this? Thanks in advance for any help.

File system (is it “btrfs”)? Some people have had problems, though not freezing.

What graphics adapter? My laptop sometimes freezes, apparently due to bugs in the driver for Intel graphics. Your description fits what I see. Does it always freeze at this point, or only some of the time.

I think it has something to do with the Nvidia, I think it’s got to do with frequency, is there a way that I can set it for 1024x768? without reinstalling? How do I get to the conf files and boot log?

If you are using Nvidia graphics, and have not installed the Nvidia drivers, then you are probably using “nouveau”. And yes, that has problems with KDE.

I suggest that you try login to “Icewm”.

If you are stuck in KDE, then CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (twice) should abort the session and get you to a login screen. At the login screen (probably KDM), switch to "Icewm. You can do that by clicking on the tool (wrench, spanner) toward the bottom left.

Once you are logged into Icewm, you will at least have a better ability to look around and make changes.

Two possible changes you could make:

1: Turn of “Desktop effects” in KDE. After that, KDE will probably work fine (unless you turn them on again). To do that, edit the file “.kde4/share/config/kwinrc”, and look for the “[Compositing]” session. If there is a line “Enabled=true” then change that to “Enabled=false”. If there is no such line, then just add to that section (the “false” version).

OR

2: Install the Nvidia drivers. Then KDE will work just fine. While you are using Icewm, you should be able to start “firefox” and do some web searching to find out how to add the drivers. I did that by adding the Nvidia repo (among the community repos you can add in Yast Software Repositories), then installing the driver appropriate to my Nvidia card). For me, it was the G02 driver.

My guess is that you will he happier with the Nvidia drivers. So I suggest you go for option 2.

Thanks, got her up and running, changed the resolution to 1900x1024, works fine now
