13.2 >> 42.2 Upgrade ???

I have two desktops and a laptop running openSUSE 13.2. They are very stable and do everything I need to do. However, I don’t want to get too far behind the curve on upgrades.

Do I need to upgrade from 13.2 to 42.1 and then to 42.2 or will it work in one step?

What problems should I anticipate?

You might be better off doing a clean install of 42.2. Do you use kde4 or gnome?

I’ve just done an in-situ upgrade on a spare laptop from 13.2 to Leap 42.2 that went without issue, but always a good idea to back up any important data before attempting to do so. In my case, I didn’t have any valuable data to worry about, and I simply went with the OSS, Non-OSS, and respective update repos, refreshed, then pulled the trigger with ‘zypper dup’. No issues whatsoever.

Goods Report! Thank you. I had rather upgrade than install clean since there are no issues with the existing 13.2 installation. Hopefully, an upgrade will bypass all the video issues on the desktops and the terribly complicated boot problems on the dual boot laptop. Is that a reasonable assumption?

Also, I have a nephew who has an old computer (originally came with Windows XP I think) and no money (first year schoolteacher with wife and two kids). He is interested in openSUSE because of hardware and software cost but is not a computer person. I am thinking of putting 13.2 on his machine instead of 42.2 for two reasons: 1) I have been using 13.2 since it came out and can help him with any problems he might have transitioning from Windows; and 2) I am not sure about his hardware meeting 42.2 requirements (64bit). What is your advice?

13.2 support stops in less then 2 months 42.1 in about 3 so after that no patches or fixes. Of course it will not stop running just won’t get any official patches thus security is totally on you :stuck_out_tongue:

An upgrade will not in any way fix any multi-OS boot problems. Describe the problem and maybe we can help.

Video problems may or may not be better what hardware???

The multi-OS boot problems occurred when I upgraded Windows 8 to Windows 10 on the Toshiba Loptop. They were solvedin a previous thread with your generous help. Will upgrading openSUSE affect the current boot settings?

The video problems on the desktop computers were relatively easy to fix by installing the proprietary drivers. Will upgrading openSUSE affect the current installed drivers?

I should not have introduced the second issue of how to help my nephew in this thread. Sorry.

No. I assume you’re just going to edit the official repos (to point to 42.2), and upgrade using ‘zyppr dup’?

Yes, since the proprietary drivers will need reinstalling post-install.

I did see your other post saying you probably should not have added this part in your thread, but since you did:

I have set up a friend who has a quite old PC that originally ran XP with 42.1 and it is running like a charm. As for 64-bit, find out what processor is in that PC, because I bet it is 64-bit. If so, give it a try.

In my case, I personally would make a couple backups using Clonezilla for one and EaseUS_ToDo for the other, to preserve all info and data on his current system. I would then just go ahead and test an install of 42.2, which I believe will run just fine.

Thank you.

I apologize for not replying sooner. Things have been messy around here and this project fell off the priority list.
