(13.1 TW) purge kernels not working

All up to latest updates. On reboot, purge-kernel is not running. I now
have 6 kernel versions now in /boot.

When I run:

toshiba-lt:~ # systemctl start purge-kernels.service

The prompt comes back right away, no message on the screen or in
/var/log/messages.

From /etc/zypp/zypp.conf:

code

Comma separated list of kernel packages to keep installed in

parallel, if the

above multiversion variable is set. Packages can be specified as

2.6.32.12-0.7 - Exact version to keep

latest - Keep kernel with the highest version number

latest-N - Keep kernel with the Nth highest version number

running - Keep the running kernel

oldest - Keep kernel with the lowest version number (the GA

kernel)

oldest+N - Keep kernel with the Nth lowest version number

Note: This entry is not evaluated by libzypp, but by the

purge-kernels service (via /sbin/purge-kernels).

Default: Do not delete any kernels if multiversion =

provides:multiversion(kernel) is set
multiversion.kernels = latest,latest-1,running

Ken

Been manually purging kernels for a long time on Tw, just to keep it down to 3 or 4. I normally use YaST SM to do that.

It has been reported to the opensuse mailing list earlier this month, see here: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2014-02/msg00539.html

That last page post references a bug number, and if you back track, you will a suggestion that the kernel names used now have been confusing the service.

PS. surprised you missed it, since you posted a [different] thread there a couple of days later.

A Google search showed the issue as showing up with 12.3 and questioned
if it would be fixed for 13.1, apparently that is not the case.

My fantastic memory has failed me regarding this. Perhaps a different
Ken?

Ken

I’m quite sure there was a brief period when automatic kernel purges worked properly on Tw. Memory fails me as to when that was, late 12.3 base or earlier part of 13.1 base before the large KDE upgrades when kernel updates were the main feature.
