13.1-rc2 snapperd high I/O and CPU usage

Hi,

I decided to try brtfs and 13.1 RC2 and besides all known and reported bugs I noticed that my HDD is often triggered and highly loaded. In the “top” I see snapperd using up to 33% cpu (quad core system) and I/O wait up to 40%.

I saw only wiki saying that snapper is part of brtfs tools but haven’t found any issues like this.

Can someone comment why is it often loading the system and is there a way to disable it?

Thanks

AFAIK in the default configuration (/etc/snapper/configs/root) every hour a new snapshot is created. And old snapshot get cleaned up after some time. This may load your system.

And every time you use YaST and zypper, two snapshots (pre/post) are also taken.

@tosiara Before deciding to try btrfs did you not read any official documentation e.g openSUSE 12.3: Chapter 4. Snapshots/Rollback with Snapper

Yes, I know it’s for 12.3. In particular see 4.2 where it states:

If you set up the root partition with Btrfs during the installation, Snapper—pre-configured for doing rollbacks of YaST or zypper changes—will automatically be installed.

And note 4.5. Disabling Snapper, if that’s what you want to do.
