13.1 installer doesn't start with GTX 750

Hi Colleagues,

I have a problem with this installer and I don’t want to install 13.2 because I can’t find PPPOE there.
12.3 does the same.

I found an older 11.4 DVD and system boots only if I select failsafe or nomodeset flag.
Google is saying the Nvidia is the culprit and probably I need to install 3rd party driver. I can sort it out I think.

Can you please help, should I abandon the update and stay with 11.4…
I only need the updated mozilla in fact and graphics drivers…

I’m pretty disappointed, I have never had problems with this distro.

Can you advise pls?
Thanks,
intze

so you’re trying to install the nvidia drivers the hard way and it doesn’t work right?
What are the errors you’re getting?
11.3 is way too old at the moment only openSUSE 13.1 and 13.2 are supported.
What’s your problem with ppoe, I have no problems with 13.2.
First things first if you’re a type that doesn’t like reinstalling an OS get openSUSE 13.1 aka the current Evergreen and install the nvida drivers the repo way (just do copy/paste from bellow)

sudo zypper ar -f ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/13.1/ nvidia
sudo zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG03

well that’s it, pretty simple

If you want to use the installer from nvidia’s site you will need to install a lot of extra’s, I don’t remember all of them but gcc compiler and the kernel headers are a must, then you need to compile and load the driver, nvidia’s installer has a decent readme you can read it.

ps. what’s the problem with ppoe are you missing a network management tool?
the only versions that will get any mozilla updates are 13.1 and 13.2.

What do you mean with that?

# zypper info rp-pppoeLoading repository data...

Or am I misunderstand something?

Can you advise pls?

Press F3 and select “No KMS” at the installer medium’s boot menu:
http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/en/6/60/Grub-installation-boot-nokms.jpghttp://files. opensuse.org/opensuse/en/6/60/Grub-installation-boot-nokms.jpg

If you don’t have those options (they are only available if you don’t use UEFI), press ‘e’, look for the line starting with “linux” or “linuxefi”, and append “nomodeset” at the end. Then press ‘F10’ to boot and start the installation.

When the system is installed, you probably should install the proprietary nvidia driver. See here:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers
Note that you’ll need the first one, labelled “For GeForce 8 or later”, as you have a GeForce 700 series card.

just checked and nvidia only has binary drivers for openSUSE 12.2 and above, and 12.2 and 12.3 might be deleted soon.
Do you have the 11.3 DVD installer, if so install gcc, the kernel driver and what ever the nvida installer text file asks for, keep the run file someehere you can find, go to run level 3 and start the installer, read what it states.

ps. if you’re having issues with the dvd installers try the live kde/gnome iso’s they can be installed to disk rather simply.

wow, 3 great replies in only 30 minutes.
very nice, thank you very much!

I’ll try in the evening with the video options, as I’m at work now…

my bad, didn’t think I could use flags with the boot from DVD…I did it in the past only for the OS x…
Sorry!

Well I’ll stick with 13.1 for now as I have the installer but great to see pppoe available also in 13.2. I remember I didn’t find it in 13.2 after searching a little bit but sincerely I didn’t put too much energy in finding it. :shame:

just keep in mind that if you have a cpu with a build-in gpu (all never intel’s i3-i7 have them) you might need to disable it via bios or you might need bumblebee

Don’t use bumblebee unless you have a Optimus based system (ie Intel+NVIDA on an Optimus note/lap top) Just having a Intel+NVIDIA by themselves is NOT an Optimus system. Best to just turn the Intel GPU off in the BIOS

thanks all!
working just perfectly after 1h fight against pppoe (i think i’ll finally get a router) I always forget installing smpppd and qinternet.
now I’d like to update everything except mozilla… can I stop mozilla from updating with the regular updates? I have some great addons like forecastfox and they are not compatible anymore after 29.0.

you can set it to taboo in yast, on the other hand keeping an old browser for an old addon is a bad idea, I have a few addons from Firefox 1.0 days that still work.

tx I_A, I still prefer the addon… I don’t understand why changes are so drastic making the addons incompatible.
I have now a little problem with the R8169/8111 network driver… it seems it’s pretty common and I’ll bump an appropriate topic.

The quest is why do the people that write the addons not update?

i’m trying to install the uefi 13.1 now… but the installation is stuck on messed numbers and letters on the screen. I suspect the gfx are the issue again.
no F3 option or command line.
can you pls help again?
do i need to download another iso?
thanks…

ps: @gogal, finally they fixed the addon, it’s a great addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/ro/firefox/addon/forecastfox-fix-version/

Yes, this is only available on legacy (i.e. non-UEFI) boot.

do i need to download another iso?

No.
Just press ‘e’ on the keyboard in the boot menu, and append “nomodeset” at the end of the line starting with “linux” or “linuxefi”. Then press ‘F10’ to start the installation.

ty very much wolfi.
