Hi,
Remember me, the one with an external Seagate HDD which is not bootable and will not “touch” the internal hdd (sda) which is dedicated to Windows Vista.
I had managed to install 12.2 booting off a memory stick and the system ran well for quite some time. But a few weeks back after an online update the system stopped booting into 12.2. The grub 2 menu came on ond on selection got the message " file “/vmlinuz-3.4.11-2.16-desktop” not found. I had requested for help (another thread) but in spite of trying everything including booting from a live cd etc etc it was no use.
Fed up I started trying to install 12.3 in the same manner. No joy. Either the boot loader would not install or if it appeared to install, on reboot the system dumped me into grub-rescue.
Finally I tried putting “/boot” also on the 1GB memory stick. Success!
My hardware and layout (for 12.3):
DELL Dimension C521 with AMD Athlon 64, 160 GB HDD internal, 4 GB ram, DVD writer, External HDD Seagate GoFlex 2TB (not bootable)
Internal HDD dedicated to Vista. External HDD first primary partition 1TB for Window. Second partition 120 MB EXT 4 - spare not used. Third extended partition with 4 GB Swap, 20 GB / and 20 GB /Home. The 1 GB memory stick is a single partition with Ext 4 and holds the /boot. Grub 2 is selected to boot from /boot and “custom” off the USB memory memory stick.
Hi vazhavandan,
Thanks. I had opted to post here since the solution was linked with my earlier posts related to 12.2 problems. And I was reluctant to add it to existing 12.2 thread since I had to dump that install. Also the solution and the experience could possibly help someone in a similar situation viz non-bootable external hdd.
