quick question… when 12.3 stable is released will i have to do a upgrade from 12.3 if im already on tumbleweed???

This thread may be interesting. He was posted when 12.2 came out. Thread starter (gregkh) is main tumbleweed maintainer.

Not if you have setup the correct repos according to the documentation.
One day you will notice a huge update waiting.

Assuming the process remains unchanged from that used for 12.2 and earlier, the answer is Yes.

First you will need to re-base your system on 12.3 by running zypper dup. If you have set up the repos correctly according to the Tumbleweed documentation (wiki and forum articles), the “current” repos will automatically point to the standard 12.3 repos and the Tumbleweed repo will be empty of useful packages. You can see when that has taken place, e.g. by viewing with YaST > Software Management. This will be a massive upgrade/downgrade/removal of many installed packages (maybe around 1-1.5GB download or more), to reach the 12.3 levels.

Then you wait for the Tumbleweed repo to fill with newer packages after a suitable pause. It will continue to do so and you can upgrade with zypper dup when and as frequently as you choose to.

You could also re-base by doing a clean install of 12.3 using a liveCD (smaller initial download) or DVD (bigger download). Then change to the repo configuration for Tumbleweed as above, and follow your normal updating pattern for Tw. However with that method you will need to consider what happens to old /home contents with your settings and your data.
