I installed a fresh copy of 12.3. It ran through install, rebooted and started auto-configuration, then wen to the splash screen (background?) and froze there. I tried rebooting and re-installing, same results. Found that in VMguest settings, under Display, having the Accelerate 3D graphics checked was the cause of the issue. I turned it off and I was able to boot up to a GUI login.
However, I should think I’d want this setting on, not off. I’m going to try installing VMWare tools and see what happens.
So I after turning off the 3D accelaration in VMware host Settings, I was able to login, however, my video did not re-size to the full screen, but remained at 800x600, even though I have VMWare Workstation setup to resize my desktop.
I installed the VM 9.02 host tools, (which removed some pre-existing open vm packages) and was able to log in and my desktop resized to full screen. I then shut down and changed 3D accelaration back on and started up the VM again. Once again, it froze on the splash screen.
So it would appear that the openSUSE 12.3 will NOT work with VMware Workstation 9.02 3D video accelaration. Hopefully this will be fixed soon, by someone who know a little more than I do.

Only if you report it - not here, but on a Bugzilla.
