HI All,
Several days ago, I downloaded the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of OPEN SUSE 12.3,
mile stone 1.
.
The 32 bit version came in 4.2 gigabytes and the 64 bit version came in 4.4 gigabytes.
When I went to make a DVD for each, I found a problem. First of all the 32 bit version
was just small enough, apparently, to fit on my single layer DVD system, while the 64
bit version was just too big.
.
I wonder if there is anyone who knows who the developers of the 64 bit 12.3 version
are and who could get to them and ask them to reduce the size of the .iso file by 200
megabytes, or somehow have it come down in two files that would go on separate
DVD blanks.
.
This problem is probably not going to go away. Many people who use SUSE Linux
still use older equipment with single layer drives, and so they could be prevented from
downloading and using SUSE linux in the future.
.

Hold on. 12.3 is a Beta version, so you must ask in the beta forum, not
in the hardware forum.
Send a personal message to a moderator and ask him to move this thread,
and next time, choose better where to write.

Ha! And you know them too, they are in the factory mail list. Learn how
to communicate with them searching our wiki for the page on how to get
help or how to communicate.
It is probably an unintentional error that will go away in the next
milestone, I suppose.

Yes, I am pretty sure that this is correct.
In the meantime, it is possible to install using a USB flash drive (that’s what I used).
Or use a double layer DVD.

No, that’s not possible. It has never been done, it is an error.

I am going to move this entire thread to the Pre-Release/Beta area of the forum. I ask that users do not post on this thread until after it is moved.
NNTP users, if you see this post in the ‘64-bit’ openSUSE forum area please do NOT reply to it, but rather go to the openSUSE forum pre-release-beta area, where you will see a post by me, quoting the original post, so as to restart this thread there.
The move may take ~20 minutes. Thankyou in advance for your patience.
The above thread started by user wa6mbz has been moved from the 64-bit area, where it was inappropriately located, to the Pre-Release/Beta area of our forum. NNTP users, if you wish to confirm/check the older posts (most of which I quoted above) you can go to the 64-bit area and look for a thread of the same title. However I ask that you do NOT reply to this thread in the 64-bit forum area, but rather only reply to this thread here in the Pre-Release/Beta area.
This thread is now open again for anyone to post on. Thankyou to all for your patience during the thread move.
I see this happen in a lot of distros beta versions, so it is not something unique to openSUSE. I second the ‘usb’ suggestion.

Yes, a USB stick has the advantage of not wasting a dish when the next
milestone comes out soon
