12.2 - Kate and Kwrite

Hello.

In the left panel, is it possible to show folders rather than places.

If yes how to change that.

You can set Kate to show the full path. But I’m not sure what you mean. I don’t see “places”, see a Documents tab, when clicked it displays all open files, if desired with full path (I don’t use that since half of my screen estate would be used by the paths.

In the plugins bit of kate, there are two “Explorer” type plugins. Both are decent, but slightly different from each other. Both will display a tree of folders (rooted at any arbitrary folder, ie / or /home/foo/my_project) in a sidebar on the left (or wherever). Give them a go.

You can have both enabled at once (you get a different tab for each), or just enable the one you like best.

This is what I have :
SUSE Paste

This is what I want, but don’t know how to.
SUSE Paste

that’s neither Kate nor Kwrite.
That’s the KDE file manager.

I don’t think it is possible to show folders rather than places.
You can show folders rather than places in Dolphin when it is opened standalone if that is any help.

In Kwrite in upper left corner there is “places” and a cross.
Untic that.

In upper right corner there is Options (a monkey wrench),

In there you can put it back.

I got that working on opensuse 10.x and 11.x

I’d imagine in those cases you would have been using KDE 3.xx with konqueror as the default file manager.

What is the relationship between the file manager choice and the subroutine which presents the file organization tree in the “save as” menu : None.
There are a lot of app which show the directory names rather than the place names.

as I understand it (and I don’t profess to be any kind of expert in this area so could be wrong) is that the open / save dialogue in Kate and Kwrite (as with most KDE apps) is provided by kdialog / kfiledialog. In KDE 4.xx this resembles the default file manager in appearance (dolphin) and in 3.xx series resembles the default file manager (konqueror).

As you can see - when called from within Kate or Kwrite there is no option in kdialog to achieve the view you want. The only option to adjust the view is to have places or not to have places.

I seem to recall that what you are trying to achieve may have been possible in KDE 3.xx (but again could be wrong) but I have not seen it in KDE 4.xx (at least 4.7, 4.8 and 4.9)

That is obvious but you should not keep telling something is not there
or is impossible.

Did you even try what I posted earlier?

is that the open / save dialogue in Kate and

Please!

Here’s a few screen shots I made:

I can’t believe this kind of hand holding in a GUI of an editor needs to
take place.

I don’t ask your opinion, I am asking help to do something that I don’t know how to do it.

Exactly.
Noted that it is not possible.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Thank you for taking time to help me.

Have you enabled the file browser plugin in kate and the right click
into the view on the left and choose to view it as tree?
This gives for me the following which looks like what you want.
http://paste.opensuse.org/91338689
(ignore that the screenshot is in german)

PC: oS 12.2 x86_64 | i7-2600@3.40GHz | 16GB | KDE 4.8.5 | GTX 650 Ti
ThinkPad E320: oS 12.2 x86_64 | i3@2.30GHz | 8GB | KDE 4.9.3 | HD 3000
eCAFE 800: oS 11.4 i586 | AMD Geode LX 800@500MHz | 512MB | lamp server

This doesn’t answer your question. But I think it’s possible to do this in Kile (a derivative of Kate), by selecting the `Open File’ option immediately to left of the left-most file-tab.

This is exactly what I want and I did not remember how I got it.
Thank you so much for helping:):good:
