12.2 installed second monitor and login hangs after reboot

Installed a new asus DH 6450 radeon graphics card. Connected monitor to the dvi port and then installed 12.2 from scratch on a new disk drive. The install went well, followed the sticky for the multimedia, switched to packman repositories and installed all patches. PC working like a champ.

With PC booted and while in the “configure desktop” -> “Display and Monitor” my monitor connected via the dvi connection shows just fine. I now connect my second monitor via the vga port and the “display and monitor” sees the second monitor get connected. I receive the message to auto config, and I select auto config. “Display and Monitor” sees the device no issues so far. Make the changes to set the dvi as default and arrange who is left and right, save changes and exit and I am up and running on two monitors no issues, so far.

I logout and than back in no issues I reboot my pc and we I am returned to the login screen and enter my credentials and my login hangs on the configuration of kde. The vga monitor starts to flicker and that is it, I am hung. I have to power off the PC and disconnect the vga monitor and reboot and I am back in business once again.

I have been reading post looking for a similar issue but at this time I am unable to find something of the like. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kellykare

Just a little more information on problem with the second monitor after more investigation. I had a KVM switch in between due to having several PC from the on esingle monitor. Now it is removed and all connections are direct.

Now when i reboot the PC with the second monitor configured I am able to login, the monitor that is set to primary works just fine. the second monitor will have a single line at the top that will flicker, but you can see the text roll past on the line during a reboot and and you will see the back ground screen color on the single line.

Still looking for anyone with ideas on how to fix or even were to start looking.

Thanks,

Kellykare

I just did a new install of 12.3 and the same problem still exist. But with some different results.

With the second monitor “vga” disconnected I boot 12.3 and the 1`st monitor works good. I then go into configure desk top and display and monitor, and i plug in the second monitor “vga” and it connects. It appears as disabled. I then select the correct setting for the monitor apply changes and exit and the second monitor starts working as expected.

Once I reboot i lose the monitor and the screen starts flashing and unable to correct.

Now before booting I go into configure desk top and display and monitor, and disable the vga monitor. and unplug the monitor and reboot, login back in and follow the steps above and the second monitor works just fine. Seem like a bunch STUFF to have to do to get the second monitor working but thats it.

i have no idea what the problem is. Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you using the open source radeon driver, of the proprietary fglrx driver? Dual screen configuration has been problematic with KDE since I can remember. Changes you make using the KDE ‘Display and Monitor’ utility get stored in ~/.kde4/share/config/krandrrc, however the configuration does not seem to be applied at login.

It is possible to manually configure your desired ‘dual screen’ behaviour, by editing the appropriate config files in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory. If using the proprietary driver, you should be able to generate a ‘dual screen’ config via the ‘aticonfig’ utility.

The driver I am using is the driver that was installed with the 12.3 installation distribution DVD. I have made to other changes to drives. Which driver is included in the distribution and how would I determine if I am using the proprietary driver?

I really appreciate your early reply back.

I think i may have answered my own question. if i have the proprietary drive I should have the folder /usr/share/fglrx, correct? I checked and i do not have that folder.

# ls /usr/share/fglrx
ls: cannot access /usr/share/fglrx: No such file or directory
linux-2ozr:/usr #

I also went looking for the aticonfig utility, and it appears that utility folder, */usr/X11R6/bin/aticonfig, * does not exits on either.

#:/usr/X11R6/bin # ls -la
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 26 09:22 .
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Mar 6 05:36 …
#:/usr/X11R6/bin

Could this be part of the issue? Do i need to install the proprietary ATI driver?

Yes, by default you’ll be using the open source driver. (It should handle dual screen operation okay though).

You could try installing the proprietary driver if you’d like.

There is a repo for 12.3 here:

Index of /mirror/amd-fglrx/openSUSE_12.3

I installed the new drive and i am able to hold both screens after a reboot. Now i have to configure the dual monitors. Tran the aticonfig and it display a Landry list of options. Do you know a link to a good “How To” on how to use aticonfig to configure the dual monitors?

I dump the notes on the aticonfig tool and i ran the setup for the primary and secondary monitor, reboot and they both come up. I am able to move my mouse pointer from screen 0 to screen 1, but i am not able to drag windows from screen 0 to screen 1. I must be missing another setup parameter. Any ideas.

I was able to get my second monitor working. I am going to post what I did to get it to work because it seems that this problem is out there are there is very little information on the exact steps to take to get the setup to work. So I want to share the steps i followed to fix.

This solution is for radeon graphic control “AMD”. In this case the card is a Asus HD 6450 Silent controller.

 1. install the proprietry drive instead of using the open source drive.
 2. Add the repo for 12.3 from the following link : http://geeko.ioda.net/mirror/amd-fglrx/opensuse_12.3
 3. Install the drive using software manager. demanding it you are 32bit or 64 bit will determine which drive to install. in installed the 64bit version of “fglrx64_xpic_susse123”.
 4. exit and reboot your PC.
 5. if you have a new install of 12.3 you will have to go to /etc/X11 and cp xorg.conf.install to xorg.conf.
 6. now you are ready to configure the your setup using aticonfig. There is not need to make a backup copy of xorg.conf because aticonfig will make a backup copy for you.
 7. use the following command to configure your setup.

aticonfig --initial=dual-head --screen-layout=right --resolution=0,1280x1024 --resolution=1,1600x900 --xinerama=on

In this example the second monitor #1 is to the right of the primary monitor #0. The param xinerama=o allows you work to be used across both screens.

Reboot and you will be up and running.

Sorry, I have been very busy with work, so didn’t have time to reply sooner. Anyway, looks like you’ve managed to get it dual screen operation working now.
