I am used to install opensuse on my PCs and laptops since 11.1.
I don’t suffer big problems during this years and I constantly update my distro until 12.1 only with update of repositories and to submit
zypper ref
zypper dup.
But when I disgracefully decided to update 12.1 to 12.2, I am fallen in a doom that I didn’t forget since installation of first release of Windows 95…
So when I tried to update my system with zypper, at reboot system is broken and it goes in kernel panic.
Only choice is to download the full distro and burn image on dvd and try to update installation but this try fails too, so I tried new installation but this try fails because initrd goes in error
with line 28: can’t open /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib
So before to try to reinstall 12.1 or 11.4 I kindly ask if there is a workaround to bypass this error.
Thanks,
Tony
You did not mention what hardware you have. Did you check the DVD and or ISO with the media check? Since the zypper update did not work do not do an upgrade from the DVD do a new install. Update assumes a good OS which you do not any longer have.
I just upgraded my 12.1 main PC setup to 12.2, but actually I did a clean install of 12.2 from the DVD, while keeping my already separate /home folder, not formatting it, but just mounting it. I was able to keep all of my old settings, but I did have to reload every previous application I had been using for this to work. It seemed to work for me like a champ and highly recommended to anyone wanting to keep their old settings from 12.1. openSUSE 12.2 introduces grub 2, a new boot manager and so doing a clean installation from the DVD while keeping your old settings may be the safest way to do that function.
Thank You,
