12.2 Boot Has Scrambled Image

Hello,

So I finally got 12.2 installed, but have this odd boot bug I think someone can probably figure out.

When I boot my system, the KDE desktop is a scrambled mess of incoherent pix-elation. If I do a Ctrl+Alt+Del then Enter, the screen resets and I get a log in screen I can read and put my password into. After I put in the password and press Enter, I get a usable desktop. Before upgrading I was running 12.1 with a secure log in and when I installed 12.2 (new install, not upgrade) I selected automatic log in. This is on the second install attempt. On the first attempt I selected a password protected log in and the system would default to a white screen with tiny colored pixels all over and would not allow any activity so I changed the boot selection to automatic.

For more information, before upgrading my core system, I installed 12.2 into VirtualBox both from an iso and from CD and both installations were flawless, thus I suspect there is some error with my previous 12.1 settings and the new 12.2 install.

Thank you for your help,

Scott

You’ll probably never be happy until you have backed up and don’t a completely clean install to formatted partitions

why do you use that old (1980’s) DOS command sequence ?

dd

Because until now, our distro has just “always” worked so there has been no reason to learn a new one.

This is a little more drastic of an approach then I was hoping for. However, I understand exactly what you’re implying.

Thank you.

…and you were right!

I ended up having to do a fresh install specifying the bootloader into the MBR as well as setting all partitions to be formatted. After all was done and loading went well, I immediately went to the community repositories and added Packman and nVidia then installed all required updates. I then proceeded to do a couple of reboots just to make sure and a clean sys backup to an external.

Everything works great now! : )

Thank you!

That’s good to know, well done.
