12.2 Apper Upgrade - Black Display, Visible Cursor on 1 of 3 User Accounts

First of all I hate to bother you folk with a 12.2 problem while you’re in the middle of a 12.3 upgrade. But any assistance is sincerely appreciated at your convenience.

Yesterday(March 13) I did an Apper upgrade on my system. There was an openSuse kernel update as part of the updates that required a reboot (the kernel update itself may have nothing to do with my problem, by the way) . The update was done from user account rdflynn. Upon reboot and logging in, the progress bar appears and as it completes, the screen goes black with only a visible cursor. The user session ‘sounds’ like a successful reboot due to wav that plays upon a successful login, yet screen remains black.

In attempting to power the system down, I am able to connect very successfully to the two other accounts on the system (via switch user), namely root and guest. Everything appears to be normal and operating on both of those user accounts. And as nice as the root and guest accounts are, my main account, rdflynn, is still unavailable (or more likely unviewable).

A very old thread suggested disabling [Compositing] in kwinconfig and doing a alt-f2 ‘plasma-desktop’ which I attempted but to no avail.

Below is some system information, plus a portion of the /var/log/messages log that occur during an attempt at switching user to rdflynn. I’m more than happy to provide any additional info at your request.

And thank you all in advance.

Never ever login on a desktop as root. Search Google why not :).

The easiest route for you to get back your desktop back to default is to logout, login on the working guest account, and do this:

su -c 'rm /home/YOURUSERNAMEHERE/.kde4/share/config/plasm* '

Enter the root password when prompted for.

Then logout, login on your own account and you should see the default green openSUSE KDE desktop.

Unviewable due to that there, assuming that doesn’t happen with the other userids and you reported them as ok. Powerdevil can’t find the kernel backlight interface? Anyone else?

Do you normally start with a clean desktop each login, or the previously saved session?

Knurpht,

Thank you. The rm worked.
