Yes, I know KDE3 is old hat, but I still need to ask this.
I upgraded (if that’s the right term) from openSUSE 11.4 (great version, that! I’ll really miss it) to 12.2 a few weeks ago and though I have tracked down and fixed all the bugs that have been giving me troubles, I still have two that I just can’t get rid of.
The first is fairly minor as there are ways around it. It appears that KDE3 is missing its kio_slave sysinfo, so I get nothing back from clicking “My Computer” and, if I try it from an open Konqueror window, I get an error saying that the protocol is not supported. I did try using an earlier version of the kde3 sysinfo package but that required a version of hwinfo that doesn’t appear to be around anymore.
The second is a bit more of an annoyance in that I cannot unmount a USB stick or SD card that has previously been mounted automatically. This worked well in KDE3 on openSUSE 11 but all I get now is “Reason: Not authorized to perform operation” from Mounthelper. The only options I have there is to either log in as root and dismount it there (too much effort required) or to just yank the thing out (not a good idea, really). I seem to recall a similar problem on an earlier openSUSE version (possibly 10.something) but I forget now what it was.
Both these faults appear to be KDE3 based as they don’t appear to be happening in KDE4 (no, I do NOT want to use KDE4 - I have my reasons! ;)). Not seen anything related here other than questions on mounting but that side of it works fine here. Any ideas?
I still can’t believe that openSUSE maintains a dead desktop like KDE 3.5,so of course it’s going to give a lot of headaches cause with time it’s going to break bit by bit,the only way is forward!

Absolutely.
(Please lets not argue about kde being old or whatever, that doesn’t
help the poster)
OP, if you are not familiar with mail lists, here is some help:
Well dd I must correct myself, when I said that I can’t believe that openSUSE still maintains a KDE 3.5 desktop,I really meant that I couldn’t believe that it could pull the resources for maintaining it,I don’t have a problem with choices, but still in time we will have to stick with recent and alive projects, then a dead project,it guaranties the quality of the software!
openSUSE is a community distribution - that is to say, it is maintained by individuals of their own free will; some of those people maintain KDE3 programs and I, for one, am glad they do as there are some KDE3 programs which still have more functionality than their KDE4 equivalents. So though I stopped using the KDE3 desktop some time ago, I value the work of those who maintain KDE3 programs.
I’ll have a look when time permits, but I’m not looking to replace KDE3 unless I’m happy with the replacement, hence my refusal so far to switch to KDE4. If your suggestion provides everything that I want of it, then you’ll certainly get my thanks!
Thanks for that. The forum structure is a bit daunting!
I suspected that this might be the case. I did build a VB with 12.2 with a version of KDE3 marked as “HAL enabled” and HAL downloaded but the system seemed to stubbornly refused to let HAL run. There seems to be a symlink involved, probably where systemctl has supplanted the chkconfig/service setup.

This is strange. On my 12.2 system I have HAL running well. Anyway, if you want kio_sysinfo, you should install kdebase3-SuSE package from HAL-enabled repository. Exactly kdebase3-SuSE, not necessarily other kdebase3- packages.

Nutter.
Kook.
Idiot.
KDE 3 became excellent by 3.5 but KDE 4 was a mess until 4.8. NOT
inspiring. KMail, Kontact, and KDEpim are still a mess because they are
tied to the abomination called akonadi. Moreover Amarok is mutated away
from any usefulness for larger collections (>1000 tracks).
Strange indeed. Perhaps if I set up a new install with the KDE3 with HAL enabled and hal downloaded, it might work. Alternatively, did you upgrade from an earlier system or did you install clean?
This is the main reason why I still use KDE3. KDE4.8 isn’t too bad but it isn’t up
to the standard I want it to be, and I can overlook KMail and Kontact as I tend
not to use either of them, though I completely agree about Amarok!
Actually, I’ll be dropping back to openSUSE 11.4 later this week until I can
happily conclude this whole thing. Thankfully I didn’t destroy the drive I had it
on so it’s just a matter of dropping it in and updating the fstab to take
account of the other drive changes I made. Then 12.2 can be relegated to a
Virtual Box and worked on until I’m happy with it. I’ve subscribed to the mailing list
as suggested, so I’ll finish there.
