12.1 upgrade, upon login "module is unknown"

I upgraded from 11.? to 12.1 X86_64, upon boot GDM hangs with active waiting cursor. I switch to command line terminal and try to login, credentials seem to verify correctly, however after entering password it displays last login info then says “module is unknown” and kicks back to login prompt… HELP! BTW… where the heck did the “repair installed system” option on the DVD go?!?

Anyhow, now I have critical data on that computer and I cant even login! NEVER had a problem this bad with ANY other SuSe product… been with them since 6.? more than 10 years now…

You better explain the technical actions you did when you use the very general english term “upgrade”. There are many ways to go from one level to another. Also you better find out what your level was when you started this “upgrade”. 11.? is definitely not a good starting point for some of the ways people try to upgrade.

SuSe 11.4 X86_64 is what i started with.I burt a DVD and proceded wth install choosing update existing system.
I have now backed up my data using a live gnome 12.1 CD and i found that booting without the install disk in gets me to a rescue login on the system my credentials work! now I see that here again is a problem I have had before, see my 2ng Volume group “user” containing my home folder mount point… the system did not create the special nodes for. I am having dificulty, ran mknod and followed apparent convention wher the other logical devs had been linked and soforth. now I get /dev/dm-3 is not a valid block device… vgmknodes runs but even in verbose mode, I cant find what its doing… I will keep playing a bit more as I rather not re-create the volume group again.

So, an offline upgrade.

You could read this and apply the recommendations there. You may have some
inconsistencies you have to correct manually.

Offline upgrade

Hm, things have changed a little bit since SuSe6, the name is now openSUSE.

As I read you last post, I get the idea that you use LVM. That was not part of your first explanation. You better try to make clear to explain what your system looks like. Also using mknod yourself is not realy done these days IMHO. Thus I am a bit confused about your setup.

Indeed, having to use mknode is a problem, because /dev is volatile and
anything inside disappears on reboot.

The documentation I pointed to, which I wrote, says nothing about LVM
because I know next to nothing about it; so if somebody knows what affects
it related to offline upgrades, it is a wiki, please add it.
