12.1 - Unable to reboot after forcing system to shutdown

Hello.

Configuring a new laptop ( I bought a used one ) :

  1. Have install 12.1 from DVD
  2. Have installed and configured automatic online update.
  3. Have installed initial patch and update
  4. In that state, I could not confirm If I had rebooted the system or not
  5. Have downloading LibreOffice 3.6.1 from Libreoffice.com and then installing it
  6. I shutdown the system from the KDE living button, but the system don’t stop.
  7. Have open a console and type
shutdown -r now
  1. Get a panic kernel message during the system stopped.
  2. The system never reboot with the error message :

no system

  1. Booting with a live CD I saw that some files have disappear from /boot folder.the laptop has not been completely configured, so I decided to reinstall the system completely.

My question is : In step 7 was it really stupid to force the system to shut down in that way or what should be more intelligent to do.

“shutdown -r now” is perfectly normal command, it initiates standard shutdown sequence. There must be something else in your case.

I know that but what happens ?
I suppose that the problem arise because I have continue to install a software ( libreoffice ) before rebooting after a major internet update ?

I don’t recommend that method.

Any manual method. I don’t trust the automatic update method.
