12.1 install hangs at copying log files

Installing 12.1 to an existing filesystem (no repartition/reformat). Install gets to 97% and the details view says that it’s copying log files. I let it sit there for about 15 minutes, but no progress.

Just for kicks I switched to another virtual terminal and did a ps to figure out what was going on. I could see a gzip process which is compressing a log file (the file is only a few MB, not enormous). It wasn’t obvious why the process was stalled. I tried killing the process, at which point the install acted like it was continuing but then I ran into this problem. A cold reboot caused the system to boot into an unconfigured state.

There may actually be two problems here, I’m not sure. It could be that if the problem in that thread gets solved, I can just kill the proc and continue like normal. I will watch that thread as well as this one to see if there’s any advice.
