12.1 install failure

Hi,

I just tried to install RC1 on an A64 system, 2Gb ram, Nvidia graphics. Works fine with Ubuntu 10.10 & OpenSuse 11.4. Booted off live DVD fine, install worked OK, but rebooting off the hard drive once installed displays a splash screen for a few seconds, then a blank screen & it hangs completely. Same with both Gnome & KDE installs.

Any suggestions?

RC2 became available today (it’s available on the download server as well
as via zypper) - you might give that a try and see if that works.

Did you install 32 bit or 64 bit?

If you did a 32 bit install, then this sounds like the problem I have been seeing, which is documented in Bug 708214. The installer chooses the desktop kernel, but that kernel won’t load. I had to go back and install the default kernel.

My report on how I got it working is here: Rescuing Susie

I would like to know where it is… Every time I click on the Download DVD button all I get is
Object not found!!

Take care,
Chuck

Me too.

It looks as if the repos have been updated with the new version, but the install DVDs and CDs are not yet available.

Since installing from the DVD was one of the things I wanted to test, I guess I will have to wait.

Try again? I know that sounds fatuous but I reckon blind luck played a
part in me getting a couple of successful installs - eventually.

One thing it seems you ought not to do is make any changes to the default
software during installation and also don’t run software updates until
installation is fully done and dusted. Best to do as little configuration
during installation as possible.

The faux reboot during installation often doesn’t work and then requires
a hard boot. I’ve found installation then usually continues successfully
but if it does hang again, I go back and start from scratch.

Graham Davis, Bracknell, Berks.
openSUSE 11.4 (64-bit); KDE 4.7.2; AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor;
Video: nVidia GeForce 210 (using nVidia driver);
Sound: ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA); Wireless: BCM4306

It’s working now.

Spoke too soon, I saw it on the download page and assumed (that’ll teach
me!) that meant it was live.

It should be available very soon, I guess.
