12.1 Install - Black screen after loading kernel

I’m with OpenSuse on the same machine (MSI K9AG motherboard and Radeon HD 2400 card) since version 10.x
I still use 11.3 and wanted to install 12.1 x86_64 but am unable to get past loading the kernel

Problem occurs with CD for net - install as well as with DVD, MD5 verified.
CD or DVD boots, gives welcome message and install menu.
Under Installation I can select all possible options. I tried lower resolution and even text mode install.
First I get a message Starting … Loading Linux Kernel, then the kernel loads up to 100% and the screen turns black.
Even when at the menu I select Verify installation medium instead of Installation, same thing happens.

Can anybody give me some clues ?

Try entering the boot code ‘nomodeset’ . Unless you include that code with text mode then text mode will not use it.

Did you try safe settings boot?

Also you can try to force a sysvinit boot instead of a systemd boot by pressing the F5 key at the grub menu (I believe).

Also confirm the md5sum of the .iso file as downloaded is the same as the md5sum of same file as posted on the openSUSE web site.

Also confirm you burned to a high quality CD/DVD +R/-R (not an RW) at slowest speed your burner allows (and not to a bargain basement CD/DVD).

I checked the md5sum with the md5 file. I also tried burning in auto and raw mode, didn’t specify the speed however.
My CD’s and DVD’s are indeed cheap ones but have always been OK, even for install of previous versions of OpenSuse.
I will try out what you suggested and then come back.
Thanks !

have a little read here: http://tinyurl.com/23mgej6, then

-boot install disk & select to verify installation media
-before Enter key press: type nomodeset into the Boot Options line
-press Enter

if the disk passes the verification, then on next boot select
“Installation” and again type in nomodeset before Enter…

does that help?

however, last clue: i’m still on 11.4 for several good reasons…read
around the forums…

From my brand new OpenSUSE 12.1 …
The ‘nomodeset’ indeed did the trick.
Thanks a lot.

Good news !

Note for some graphic hardware, nomodeset is just an interim setup, until the graphic problem can be addressed. (Where nomodeset turns off the automatic kernel mode setting for that boot - resulting in graphic drivers going to a less capable but possibly more compatible driver version). Of course on some other older hardware, the driver(s) that one gets with nomodeset is the only solution.
