I am just curious - there seems to be no advertising for a 12.1 prepackaged set as prior releases were in the past; what’s the current situation? will there be a boxed set of 12.1 or is the community version moving away from this type of revenue stream?

it is kinda complicated, take a look:

seems any generated revenue goes to a private company…

openSUSE®, the “German Engineered Automobiles” of operating systems!
It’s been outsourced to a company for more than 2 years now. IIRC at some point Novell decided it couldn’t support a box set operation and for a while before this announcement, there was no box set available.
This is the better link to follow for the historical perspective rather than the thread I started, which can be confusing to read.

There is a box, produced by open-slx. In the past they were the openSUSE
box, but now it appears that SUSE made them be renamed to something else.
Maybe they also forced the removal of references to it in the openSUSE web,
which is why you could not find it. Nevertheless, that is the openSUSE box.
The long explanation is in the link DenverD points to.
