12.1 automatic configuration can´t install driver for graphic card

From lines 933 onwards in file Xorg.0.log.old it looks as though the radeon
driver is loaded.
Did you mix-up the files?

Well…it seems that you were right, i replaced the files…sorry:shame:

Well, the mayhem is already here!
I guess all the advices that keellambert gave in his last post are no longer valid now?

In the meantime, at least i could try the the last oldcpu´s advice.
I am sorry again, i really did not see…

I tried again with “radeon” and then came back to “vesa”, here are new versions of the files.
Xorg.0.log.old: SUSE Paste
Xorg.0.log: SUSE Paste

Here is the output of less /var/log/messages | grep ‘Nov 27’ | grep kernel
SUSE Paste

And i know what you will think first…if i have changed the URLs and files now i will eat my hat!
And i tried what oldcpu did when dealing with his wife´s ati 9600 pro- but it didn´t work.
The way the things are going so far, i should have better started looking for a new hat by now.

Don’t forget to try this fix :

Workaround for R3xx/R4xx users (Radeon 9600/X300/Xxxx)
------------------------------------------------------

- disabled KMS by adding 'nomodeset' to boot options.

- add the following section to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf

  Section "Module"
    Disable "dri"
    Disable "dri2"
  EndSection

I just have tried it, didn´t help.

Please post the output of these two commands (or indicate where you did already post this info):

lspci -nnk | grep -a2 -i vga
hwinfo --monitor --gfxcard

We can write a minimal xorg.conf for you, which might work or not. Don’t worry if the output of hwinfo --monitor doesn’t give the real resolution of your monitor (I have a Syncmaster too and it shows wrong results). Which screen resolution would you like to use?

Boot in runlevel 3 by appending " 3" (without the quotes) in the Options line of the boot menu. Use startx as root, since it won’t run as user. Login as root is OK for what you’re doing now. Watch for error messages when you run startx and report here.

Not sure if you have it, but if you had fglrx previously installed, you should uninstall it. Also make sure it wasn’t added to your initial RAM disk (!)

lsinitrd /boot/initrd | grep fglrx
  • on 11.4, it would be /sbin/lsinitrd

@sladjo

More points from me,

  1. The file posted “Here is the output of less /var/log/messages | grep ‘Nov 27’ | grep kernel
    SUSE Paste”, isn’t.
Please try again, when you boot to the cmd line prompt, give cmd
    less /var/log/messages | grep ‘Nov 28’ | grep kernel
as we have moved on a day.

  2. Check that you do not have a file,
    /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-fglrx.conf
    If you do delete it.

  3. Check that there is not a statement in file /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf,
    blacklist radeon
If there is put a # mark in column one of that line.

  4. As root give the cmd,
    lsmod |grep radeon
If there is no output, give the cmd,
    insmod radeon
----Stop here if there are any failure messages from this cmd----

  5. Go into yast2 --Software --Software Management and delete the package,
    xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd

  6. Gerate new files as given in message #19 above, section 2.

  7. Power off with the cmd,
    halt -hip

  8. If the gui is not reached continue to 9.

  9. Go to file 50-device.conf and replace the line
    Driver “radeon”
    with
    Driver “vesa”
On the next reboot you should be back to where you started.
You should also re-install the package xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd
to stay with the standard install.

Please post the output of lspci -nnk | grep -a2 -i vga

dhcppc0:/home/sladjo # lspci -nnk | grep -a2 -i vga

SUSE Paste
It was a little too big, so i pasted it there

Which screen resolution would you like to use?

1024x768…sir, please, sir :shame:

That´s it for now. I am going to try runlevel 3 and come back.

Boot in runlevel 3 by appending " 3" (without the quotes) in the Options line of the boot menu. Use startx as root, since it won’t run as user. Login as root is OK for what you’re doing now. Watch for error messages when you run startx and report here.

Eccomi, after typing 3 (without “nomodeset”), loged in, “su”-then “startx”. Then a black screen appeared, just for a part of a second with some text on it, then all dissapeared and i hop!, i was in the splash screen of 12.1. Obviously, x has started, everything runs a bit faster now, well wait, not a bit but faster=sensibly and tangibly better than before, there was even the splash screen of KDE, which was not the case before when i booted with “vesa”, and also let me add that all the settings of firefox, Kontrollleiste, Screen that i had on 12.1 previously are gone. But i suppose that is normal. Looked in Qonqueror: 2D-vesa; 3D: swrast (no 3D-acceleration) 7.11- Just like before, nothing changed.
(I even typed “starx” without “su”, it gave me a bug report, but that is probably irrelevant, i guess. Or it is not?)

[Not sure if you have it, but if you had fglrx previously installed, you should uninstall it. Also make sure it wasn’t added to your initial RAM disk (!)

Code:

lsinitrd /boot/initrd | grep fglrx

No, the “fglrx” driver was never installed on the system. The “sinitrd /boot/initrd | grep fglrx” command gave no output.
( If i may repeat, 12.1 gave me the message at the end of the installation, when trying to automatically configure the system, that i couldn´t find any driver for my graphic card.)

/QUOTE]

  1. ess /var/log/messages | grep ‘Nov 28’ | grep kernel

SUSE Paste

  1. Check that you do not have a file,
    /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-fglrx.conf

No, i do not have such a file.

  1. Check that there is not a statement in file /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf,
    blacklist radeon

No, “radeon” is not blacklisted, but there is “blacklist radeonfb”. Should i put a # in front of it?

  1. As root give the cmd,
    lsmod |grep radeon

dhcppc0:~ # lsmod |grep radeon
radeon 982425 1
ttm 69320 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 36953 1 radeon
drm 208191 3 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 13199 1 radeon
i2c_core 34010 6 i2c_viapro,lm63,radeon,drm_kms_helper,drm,igo_bit
hwmon 12936 3 lm63,radeon,thermal_sys

You know what? I am going to reboot and go back to regular “vesa” sreen, and try the same command there, and then return here to compare the outputs.

What kind of device is that?
Is the monitor a CRT?

Keep booting in runlevel 3 until you have solved the problem.
Copy the code below in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
run startx and tell us what you see.

It might be helpful to add modelines or other options in this file.

As root give the cmd,

Is the monitor a CRT?

Yes. An old family´s PC with an old monitor. also from the family.

Keep booting in runlevel 3 until you have solved the problem.
Copy the code below in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
run startx and tell us what you see.

Now i don´t understand. When am i supposed to do that, after i have finished what keellambert advised me to do, or right now (before the steps form no.5 to 9)?

I would need some help here: how to rename and create those files (step 6: 50-device.conf-9600…etc), it seems i need root permission to do so. Now i don´t know how to do it with mc, and i have forgotten how it goes with chmod… or it was chown. A few days ago it went nicely, both with cm and chmod, and now…

Just …,

  1. From your CRT specification, I agree with you for flicker free preformance,
    – the best resolution is 1024 x 768 / 85 Hz.

  2. 12.1 is recognising your graphics card, vesa is recognising your monitor.

  3. Apologies I messed up in my response #19,
    — the first: make new file 50-device.conf is ok
    — the second: make new file 50-device.conf should read 50-monitor.conf
    — the third: make new file 50-device.conf should read 50-screen.conf

  4. As you are using a CRT the proposed modifications to the file 50-monitor.conf
    — would make it look as follows,

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "VGA-0"
    Option "VendorName" "SAM"
    Option "ModelName" "SyncMaster_765_MB"

Open a termin, log in as root, you should then be able to use MC as you did before.

Hi All,
I have sony vaio with 512MB nVidia GForce 400 GCard, and i installed 12.1 Using the Downloaded ISO from opesnsuse.org, after the installation went well, Genome 3.2 showed message that Genome 3.2 failed to launch, starting Fallback version…
Can anyone help me on this why Genome 3.2 failed and went for Fallback ?
I have been using the OpenSuse since 11.2, but all my PC experience was without any grafix card, so i really don’t have much insight on how to get the NVidia GForce 400 driver and make it installed on 12.1 or even 11.4. any help appreciated.
Thanks

Forget about that! Put everything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If this file exists, it will be read first.

too complicated.

Please, start a new thread or/and have a look at the many nvidia threads. Your problem in not related with the topic of this thread - which is about ATI radeon.

sorry ATI guys …keep it on…

Put everything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If this file exists, it will be read first.

@please_try_again
And, off course… it does not exist! It would have been too easy…
What now?
