I have not used linux for a while and installed OpenSuse 12.1 on my laptop (Dell XPS15) yesterday.
It works just fine but powermanagment doesn’t show me any options for the behaviour of the laptop lid.
I simply wish to suspend when the lid is closed so i don’t have to boot/shutdown every time.
Can the option be added back ? and how ? all suggestions are welcome.
I just found the options in gnome-tweak-tool… but somehow they do not work.
It says the laptop should hibernate/sleep but the laptop doesn’t respond whn i close the lid.
So most often such problems are due to poor hardware support like video perhaps. I found one link that suggested this laptop used the nVIDIA Optimus tech and so it might be worthwhile to make a visit here to see if it is true for you: Bumblebee - NVIDIA Optimus support for Linux!

The Toshiba I normally use hibernates on the first lid close after a boot
but subsequent wakenings followed by a lid close require that I close the
lid, open it, then close it a second time to get the lappy to hibernate.
Never have fogured that one out but it’s a minor nuisance - have you tried
re-opening the lid and reclosing when hibernation fails?
My laptop doesn’t do anything when I close the lid, although it’s set to sleep in gnome-tweak-tool. What’s odd is that I believe only openSUSE has this problem - it works fine on other Linux. Ah well…
