11.4 to 12.1 migration

I’m in the process of installing 12.1 from DVD. I would like to keep my KDE desktop and application configurations as they were under 11.4. Is there a guide as to what I should copy over from my previous /home directory? Thanks.

You can just keep your entire /home (That is, do not format it)

If you want to format it, the main folder is .kde4
.local also contains stuff you may want

Personally I tend to keep side by side installs in place. Then I always format the new install. And I can keep all my file in place easily and at the same time benefit from the clean install.

I understand the first sentence, I always do the same (and continue to use the “old” version for serious work for a while). But I don’t understand the second: you mean you format a fresh /home during install (which is what I do) and then gradually copy the files from “old” to “new” /home? That’s what I do: some configuration files while I use idle hours to make the new install look and feel like the old one (fonts etc), while bugs are sorted and required applications installed, and then finally, when I’m ready to make the switch, I copy all the data and start working in earnest with the new version - usually a month or so after initial installation. Is that what you meant, or are you suggesting a better way?

YES

We seem to be of the same line of thought.

Similar way here. I backup /home but since I do not want to copy
everything back, I just delete the hidden . files and directories. When
install leaving this cleaned home intact. After that I carefully copy
back the hidden files and directories which I think make sense step by
step from the backup.

PC: oS 11.4 (dual boot 12.1) 64 bit | Intel Core i7-2600@3.40GHz | KDE
4.6.0 | GeForce GT 420 | 16GB Ram
Eee PC 1201n: oS 11.4 64 bit | Intel Atom 330@1.60GHz | KDE 4.7.3 |
nVidia ION | 3GB Ram

it works also for me - kept the home hidden files, and then copied them back with a clean install;
also I just did an upgrade to my oldest machine, from 11.4 to 12.1, I have to admit worked flawlessly and 12.1 (although not extensively tested) seems to behave better on this 3yr old laptop…

I’ve done a search so if I missed it, pardon me for asking again: What is the procedure to upgrade from 11.4 to 12.1, please? I have burned the ISO but it has no LiveCD option. I running the KDE version.

This a often asked question
You will see option to upgrade at this point

Though I prefer a new install
Where you could keep your /home unformatted

there are two supported/recommended upgrade paths from 11.4 to 12.1:

http://tinyurl.com/35p966c
http://tinyurl.com/6kvoflv

both upgrade from a fully updated but default installed 11.4

that “default installed” means that it has not been previously
“upgraded” from Tumbleweed, Factory or other experimental software
sources (ie, not in oss, non-oss, packman or update repos)…

so, if you are running Tumbleweed you need to ask (or read) in that forum…

or, if you are running KDE4.7 then i don’t know how to upgrade that and
be sure all the little bits are brought to 12.1 level…
