11.4 RC1 - Screen stays very dark after switching off

Hi all,

Twice now I have left my laptop idle for an extended period and the screen has turned off. Problem is once I “wake” the system the screen stays extremely dark, I can barely make out anything on the screen.

The first time I changed to another session which was also dark and rebooted the system which fixed the condition, the second time I put the laptop to sleep via a keyboard short cut and when I “woke” the system it was back to normal too…

Clearly this is not ideal

Just for additional info my keyboard short cuts for changing display brightness does not work…

I had a look at the power saving page in settings but I can’t find anything strange there… and I don’t want my screen to stay on, that would not do for a laptop…

Regards
Neil

I don’t necessarily have the answer here, but it will be hardware specific, so it might be useful to mention what graphics card and driver

This command will yield that info for you:

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --gfxcard

With this info posted, someone may be able to help you further on this.

I have seen reports that some nvidia hardware is known to behave like this. For example:

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/laptop/449527-cant-control-brightness-after-suspend.html

You could execute this terminal command to make sure only your selected screen saver, if any, will blank the screen.

xset s noblank -dpms

Thank You,

This happens for me with RC2 on a Toshiba Equium L40-156 portable which has Intel on motherboard graphics. openSUSE 11.3 runs fine on the same machine.

Then you should file a bug report.
