11.4 max resolution 1024x768 - how can I raise it?

I just installed 11.4 x64. I have already updated and installed the nvidia 260.19.36 driver via the nvidia repository. The video card is a GEforce 6200. The problem is the highest resolution it will allow is 1024x768. With the same hardware in 11.3 it was running 1920x1200. How can I get that back? What am I missing?

thanks.

check, just make the obvious adjustment for 11.4

Thanks, what did that boot line option do? I had the nvidia drivers from their repo already installed. I still can’t change resolution to higher than 1024x768. Hoping for a fix. Here is what the nvidia config tool looks like here.

Are you sure you did this

and
ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

Today is the first day I got 1650x1080@60. After install in the nvidia repos, etc. using Grub nomodeset, the /etc/X11/xorg.conf, nvidia-settings.

xrandr -q,
gft 1680 1050 60

SUSE Paste

Using the modeline, I updated the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
SUSE Paste
by using the “save to X configuration” in nvidia-settings and rebooted.

I hope this helps.

yup, did both

This sounds right, thanks, but I need a little more. What is the code line above? Where is that or how do I use it? I didn’t see it exactly like that in the xorg.conf file.

thanks…

Here is what I have. Looking to increase the res.

xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

I see the max is set at 1024, How can I increase this?

the nomodeset and the kernel no kms are set. hereand here

I reset the xorg.conf to :

Are you sure about the highest value: 55 KHz? It seems pretty low. Could it not be 85? Is that monitor really a CRT monitor? Is it/was taken from a dual screen configuration? Why do you have that (not needed) in the screen section:

    Option "TwinView" "0"
    Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "CRT-0"
    Option "metamodes" "1680x1050_60.00 +0+0"

Add that instead :

SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection

And comment out the modeline until you know that you need one.

Also boot in runlevel 3, type startx and see what happens: error messages and the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I have it working, but with a twist. I didn’t notice the CRT comment until you mentioned it. I don’t have a CRT, this is a new flat panel AOC 2236. That xorg.conf file was created via the Nvidia tool. This is a clean install with format, so there should have been no old xorg file to look at. There is however a KVM switch in the loop. I use it to connect my laptop to this monitor when working from home for a dual screen. My home computer uses this monitor only. I disconnected that and shazam, it works. I renamed the old xorg and exported a new, clean xorg from the Nvidia tool. Below is how it looks. I have not edited or added to this file. It is how nvidia set it up, and it seems to be working.

I will be out for work this week, but when I get back next weekend I need to try to work the KVM switch back into the loop without allowing the settings to change. Is there anything I can do to “lock this down” and prevent the system from modifing itself? Perhaps removing the nomodeset from the boot? (just guessing) It might work fine, I don’t know, but won’t have time to test it until Sat.

thanks again for the help. Any suggestions on the xorg. I notice that it bullt in the ModeLine you had suggested removing, but the sync rates are back up where they should be. It looks to be reading the switch box as a monitor.

Usually just select LCD>> and then the resolution you need;)

The lower HorizSync was the problem. It could not produce a higher resolution. It is better not to set sync rates at all than to set wrong ones.

@Idee
Connecting Linux (OSx or Win) directly to the DVI port automatically provide the correct resolutions through EDID.

I assumed you were more advanced and understood the terminal commands. But I also suspected you were using a KVM to connect a LCD monitor.
I didn’t know what higher resolution you wanted, I provided my xorg.conf as a sample from my LCD AOC 22lvwk which is connected to a VGA KVM.
If you noticed my xorg.conf and your nvidia-setting are the same except for Device and a 3-4 lines in Monitor.
Fortunately, you shouldn’t have a problem rebooting or connected to the KVM when the mode line is correctly set in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and grub has the option “nomodeset”

The question is now that modes are correctly set for xorg.conf how do we setup the 50-device.conf, 50-monitor.conf, etc. files so we can remove the nomodeset from the /boot/grub/menu.lst?

gtf is a VESA mode line generation tool run in terminals. You provide the resolution, refresh rate and gtf provides the modeline. cvt is another mode line calculator. I find gtf mode lines a bit clearer than cvt.

My CRT-1 is connected on DVI-1 not DVI-0 (CRT-0) from when I tried running dual monitors but reconnecting the KVM VGA ports reverted the LCD resolution.

I have a problem with KVM switch also. Seem that the CRT is not detected and it assumes a generic vesa monitor with 1024x768 max res.

For the purpose of setting up you might try removing the switch.

On mine, it turned out to be a cheap cable between the graphics ouput and
the KVM rather than the KVM itself. Swapped in a good cable and the KVM
problem was resolved. This was on a fairly expensive Belkin KVM and even
with the good cable a cheaper KVM I tried didn’t resolve the problem even
with the good cable. With the KVM in the loop you have 2 potential failure
modes if you use an extension cable anyway.

Right, thanks, but I didn’t set anything. This was a new install and this is how the system set it. That was part of the frustration.

Thanks, but select LCD and resolution where? With what tool? I read that Sax2 isn’t used anymore and don’t see a configuration option in either Yast2 or the Nvidia tool. Where can I do that? That was really kind of the first question. The great configuration tools in SuSE was why I landed on this distro so long ago. I was looking for the new way to configure. Thanks again for the help. So where are those tools or commands?
