11.4 KDE not seeing multiple monitors

How can I get multiple monitors to work?

FYI, I have Intel HD Graphics on my HP dm3t laptop with an i3 380um processor.

What do you mean by multiple monitors ? Do you mean laptop screen and one monitor ? If so, with external monitor plugged, what do you see when you type ‘xrandr’ in a terminal window (bash shell) ?

Am I correct that this laptop has Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics and it is not a hybrid graphic laptop ?

As well as oldcpu’s advice, have you tried investigating via ‘System Settings>>Display and Monitor’ yet?

This is another PC but the very same problem. Of course the system is different (opensuse 11.1 with the same chipset as the OP (a Lenovo X201 Core2Duo 520M (Arrandale). The graphics is HD integrated graphics no hybrid.
As the OP I am trying to use a second monitor. In order to do this, I use the Lenovo Docking Station Ultrabase with the VGA exit of the base. (Has DVI and VGA, since the monitor is a Samsung 740N with only VGA, this is what I use).

This is with the Monitor connected: The issue: the second monitor is just “cloned” from the original one, same resolution and what is more annoying same 16:9 while the external monitor is 17 inch 4:3 classical.
I have therefore either a black bar in the lower part. Or sometimes it does expand the image far over the size of the very additional monitor (cutting of symmetrically both left and right border).
As the system is 11.1 with a brand new kernel, it should be possible to use the graphics board without problems and also come to a solution for the external monitor. There must be a trick somewhere but I do not get it. I appreciate every help.

P.S. As the issue is nearly the same as the OP does probably experience, I am confident that this may help him also to resolve his problem, thus I did not open a different thread. I you think this is inappropriate you might move it to a separate one.

Maybe this Xorg RandR 1.2 - ThinkWiki page can offer some help. It was relevant for Xorg RandR 1.2, but maybe the manual configuration of xorg.conf will still work in this situation. Otherwise a bug report may need to be submitted concerning the intel driver.

Thank you for the hint with the XRandr ThinkWiki. I appreciate. In case I have to file a bug report, I would like your opinion. Since this is old 11.1 with new custom kernel 3.04 and Intel video driver I would file the bug report to…? My guess would be to Intel (their programmers), but if I am wrong or if you are of other opinion just drop me a line and suggest. Thank you.

An update: I emitted first the command to create a new xorg.conf file.

xrandr --version

Do I see this right and he does not recognize the card although hwinfo does report the driver correctly and loads it normally during boot?

So I went on Intel Linux Graphics: 2011Q3 deciding to install the latest video driver. And I have a few questions about this.

I will download and normally I should be able to install with automake (./configure). But I need to indicate the prefix in case the default location in openSUSE differs. Does anybody know what is the default directory for the DRI driver (Intel) in openSUSE. Compiling mesa with DRI acceleration option requires to indicate the directory. The default of the driver delivered would be /usr/local. Is this convenient?
Libdrm and libva, there I have the same problem. In general, where could I find the default location of equivalent openSUSE packages, if applicable? Is there a function in zypper or rpm or yast? Any documentation on this available for non developers (especially for my old 11.1 version). When a package is not part of openSUSE, should I stick to the default settings?

First, I can’t help you with your questions. Sorry.

I can say that what you propose is very risky, and I would lay odds that it will break your system, as it is pretty user unfriendly, and even relatively experienced packagers of X can struggle with this (from what I have read).

Another risky, but less risky way, is to install the driver if it has already been packaged for openSUSE-11.4 (assuming one is using openSUSE-11.4) by adding a very cutting edge rpm from the development X11 : xorg repository :

But if you go to Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.4/x86_64 you will see xorg-x11-driver-video-7.6-245.1.x86_64.rpm and if you look at its change log you will note:

and pray. When I tried that some years ago I was forced into a re-install. I attempted to roll back after the video driver update failed, but the roll back did not work and I had a broken system. So a caution there!

Reference openSUSE-11.1, … ahh … thats just not supported. IMHO you won’t succeed there easily without a kernel update and an X update, in which case, why not simply install 11.4 or 12.1 beta1 ? Yes beta1 is incredibly painful to install and buggy (IMHO), but again I would lay odds that any pain you encounter in 12.1 beta1 is insignificant compared to the pain you will encounter if you try to update the Intel driver via compilation on 11.4 (or on an earlier openSUSE version).

And on a different subject, with the second monitor plugged in, did you ever look at dmesg ? /var/log/messages ? /var/log/Xorg.0.log ? to see if there were any error messages that might help explain the problem ?
