11.4 Freezing

Hello,

I just installed openSUSE 11.4 that replaced an existing Mandriva installation. All hard drives were reformatted on installation. Installation was successful, but after about 10 minutes of usage, the system freezes. It remains unresponsive (cursor doesn’t move, switching windows doesn’t work, etc.), no matter how much time elapses. (This was not an issue with Mandriva.) I haven’t used openSUSE since 10.2, so I’m a bit unfamiliar with newer versions. I have 11.4 installed on my laptop, but freezing is not an issue on that machine. So, I’m a bit confused since freezing doesn’t happen on my laptop.

Here’s a little bit of information (it’s probably not enough, as I don’t know what other information might be useful):

  • Nvidia repos installed and using NVIDIA 275.21 for a GeForce 9800 GT video card; dual monitors.
  • Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550
  • 64-bit version of 11.4 installed
  • 8 gigs RAM
  • Desktop effects are enabled
  • I’ve had system monitor open and CPU usage never exceeds 20%.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

Have you tried running with effects Off?

Thanks, turning off effects seems to have worked. I had read where others were having problems before enabling the nvidia repos. Do you think there might be another driver that I could use so that I could enable effects?

I have a friend running a GeForce 9800 GT with the same driver and effects. No problem
I advise you to wait and see if some other users, of greater expertise than mine, can offer some advice.
Concentrate on getting the feel of things and don’t rush in to quick fixes.

that is excellent advice…take it slow…

you wrote “All hard drives were reformatted on installation.” does that
include your /home?? what i’m thinking is maybe your desktop indexer
(what do they call it now nepomuk/akonadi ??) is sucking up all your cpu
while trying to finish its initial info build…launch top and see what
is going on behind the scenes…if you have a huge /home or
movie/photos/music something it could take a while to build the db…

or that may have nothing to do with it…

what does top show??
