which DE comes in the 11.4 DVD? I am a VERY new user this being my first ever attempt to use OpenSUSE and I want to know what DE and greeter will the 4.7 gb DVD come with?
Hi,
Welcome to openSUSE.
The DVD gives you the choice of the DE : GNOME, KDE or others (xfce, etc.).
oh so if I just want to go with KDE would it be better to just grab the live KDE cd?
Yes and no.
They don’t come with the same bundle of apps and driver.
wich one has the broadcom-sta driver? Which one comes with moslty KDE apps?
Neither of them… but I am not sure.
I think the broadcom drivers are provided by the Packman repo : Additional package repositories - openSUSE
Ah. Okay. Well which would you advise for someone who wants KDE for the majority of his applictions (The exceptions being mainly emultors such as Visualboy Advance, pcsxr, mupen 64 etc…)
Hi,
I always install form DVD. They come with a lot more stuff than CDs and you always have the choice of DE.
You can always install stuff after the install and for the apps listed you would need to install anyway since neither CD/DVD install those by default.
what about media codecs and all that?
Those are proprietor, for the most part, and have to be installed also since only Free (as in speech) programs are included.
well that sucks. I mean linux mint installed all necessary codecs on install. which flashplayer is installed?
Hi,
I think Mint install them when you are connected to the net only, no ? Anyway, it’s not very hard to install them with the link I provided to you.
no mint installs them by default on the disc. And no it may not be hard but it is a waste of time.
yeah, a little. I assumed that MInt have special licensing scheme to provide such codecs on the CD, but openSUSE is a GNU Free project, so there is no codecs available on either the DVD or CD.
