11.3KDE Final, ATI 10.6 Drivers (Sigh)

As usual, the ATI drivers still don’t install … gives the following message:

*which: no XFree86 in
(/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin:/root/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin)

Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.34-12-desktop:; make sure that the version is
being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro
*
I have no idea what the message says, and even less of a clue about how to fix.
Anyone successfully installed ATI proprietary drivers on 11.3 yet?

The driver installed by Suse works, but RandR/Monitor setup refuses to be
persistent, and I have to set it each time I enter the desktop. This driver
also doesn’t give some resolutions that I need. I’ve read OldCpu’s write up,
and am still clueless, although I have zypped in all the prerequisites stated there.

Thanks in advance, if anyone has a solution.

Check my AMD driver solution thread (it applies to both 11.3 RCs and to 11.3 GM). The shell-script must be run as root (sudo won’t cut it); the resultant created RPM can be installed either in init 5 or init 3 (also as root of course). While the original script was written in German, I posted a Google translation to English of the page containing the shell-script, which i tested on a US English install of openSuSE 11.3 GM. The script runs with no issues. I see no reason why anyone with AMD GPUs can’t use this script with 11.3.

This procedure worked for me:
http://lizards.opensuse.org/2010/07/15/ati-hd57xxx-flgrx-drivers-under-11-3/

@PGHammer: Thanks for the input, but it didn’t work for me.

@tibitts: Thanks. That worked. Driver’s a little rough, though, in Firefox. Can’t wait for ATI to issue a release that will install straight-on in 11.3.

Thanks a lot, both.

To fix the glitches using Firefox or Thunderbird you can activate the older 2D driver Version by

aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE

But this will make rescaling windows very slow again. I also hope, that ATI will release upsdated drivers soon.

I had a prob with my rv700 (4800) black screen
But after going into yast system then /etc/sys Editor and searching
NO_KMS_IN_INITRD and set to yes removes the builtin ati 600/700 driver
rebooted and WORKS
So thanks for the tip how to modify the files.

a little late but oh well…

i am using the 10.9 driver now. and it is awesome. i had 10.7 and 10.8 both had horrible tearing problems. All resolved. Looks great.
