11.3

I am astonished and gobsmacked! I downloaded 11.2 when it was announced and wrote a 60.3 MB CDROM. Now I look at 11.3 and see that it is 4.7 GB. My monthly bandwidth rarely exceeds 1.5 GB, so it is clearly impossible to install via internet.

Why am I supposed to pay 80 Euros, in excess of R800.00 South African for a multiplicity of software that I shall never need? Something is wrong somewhere. >:(

I do not really understand why you do not simply download the network
installation cd from the official page

http://software.opensuse.org/113/en

openSUSE 11.2 64 bit | Intel Core2 Quad Q8300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.28 | GeForce
9600 GT | 4GB Ram
openSUSE 11.3 64 bit | Intel Core2 Duo T9300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.30 | Quadro
FX 3600M | 4GB Ram

well, that wasn’t a DVD, even the much smaller 11.2 live CDs were near
700 MB…

which is about exactly what the 11.2 DVD was…

maybe you used an 11.2 network install…with the network install you
can select exactly what you what to install, and it will download only
that and all dependencies for what you ask for…

the network install images are positively tiny:

openSUSE-11.3-NET-i586.iso 117466 KB
openSUSE-11.3-NET-x86_64.iso 161294 KB

Thanks, DenverD. I just looked at the update on openSUSE - will try your suggestion.

Where are you in South Africa. I’m uncapped. I have downloaded the 11.3 image and currently running it. I can burn and mail you a copy if you like.

I looked at properties for the CDROM that I downloaded and wrote to disk. Looking at properties for the “disk” gave the 60.3MB which I presumed would be the packed amount. Opening up, properties for boot are 22.3MB and for openSUSE-kde-11.2-live 665.1MB. Sorry for the confusion! :o

RustyZA kindly gave me a copy of 11.3. Unfortunately it seems that I do not have sufficint RAM - so I must look around for a hardware upgrade. :’(

you will be MUCH happier if you have the recommend amounts:

System Requirements

  • Pentium 4 2.4 GHz or higher or any AMD64 or Intel* EM64T
  • physical RAM 1 GB or more
  • 3 GB available disk space bare minimum (more recommended)
  • display resolution 1024 x 768 or higher
