11.3 wont boot

So my machine had been up and running for a couple months but I was redoing how I had things setup on my ups and shut it down properly, however it will not boot (failsafe mode either). I was able to remove the vga option at the end of the boot so it wouldnt just show a black message when it stopped boot but actually show what was going on.

I can now see that its hanging at initrd message is
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop
[Linux-initrd @ 0x375b6000, 0xa39708 bytes]

Any idea on what happened an how I can repair the issue. This is a suse only desktop running x86_64

So, one would have to assume that data has become corrupted on the openSUSE root / partition or worse, something happened to your hard drive. Once, I had a Computer Power Supply die and after it was replaced, the openSUSE partition was also toast and had to be reloaded. I actually had a similar event while messing with a UPS with a sudden shutdown and I was able to fix it by using the partition check function in GPARTED from a GNOME LiveCD I think it was. So I am thinking you need a LiveCD and try to do a partition repair and if all else fails, reload openSUSE , but do not format the /home partition if you created a separate one as has been recommended to do which can maintain all of your personnel settings. Should the hard drive do this to you a second time, one must assume it is just going bad and the two events are actually unrelated to each other except you have to be using a hard drive for it to go bad on you.

boot drive looks good, however trying to boot a live cd or into the repair system off the install dvd results in the same behavior. Doesnt appear to be the video card as same results happen between onboard and my pciE card. So it no longer looks like a software issue but seems like there must be some hardware that has gone bad, which appears that it may be the processor as memtest doesnt appear to throw any errors, granted ive only let it run 15 minutes so far. I really dont want to rebuild a machine.

So still not sure what broke but im back up and running. Replaced the cpu with another one I had, didnt work. Replaced the ram with some more I had laying around, didnt work. Unplugged all drives except cd and tried to boot, still a no go. Ended up replacing the mobo with another one I had around, then had to buy a new power supply because the one I had in the case didnt have the 8pin atx connector with it, but after replacing mobo and power supply its working again. Talk about a bad night, never had such a weird issue before.

WoW baaldemon, that is a bad night. I can only say I have been there done that. I will say that Power Supplies are number one on my hit list. Motherboards not so much but last summer, after getting out of the hospital from major surgery, my DVD player PC failed. I first replaced the power supply, but it would still just start and then turn right off, even with the new power supply installed. Finally had to order motherboard over the Internet as no local store had one supporting my Intel Q6600 CPU and low and behold, the MB was indeed bad. It did not get fixed for a month and I had to dig up my old DVD player to look at DVD’s while I was recovering. It really did make me mad. I only just this week finally got everything fully updated on this PC using openSUSE 11.3.

So, not to dilute your original story let me add that only once, in a very long time, have I had a CPU fail on its own, an Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHZ which just burnt itself up. I also fried just one CPU after managing to insert it incorrectly into the socket, but that was a very long time ago. CPU’s are very reliable unless you let it get too hot or tried to over clock it with too high a voltage. My first clone PC was a 386 and I actually owned an original IBM PC, so I go way back with PC’s. So, I do feel your pain and know the final joy and getting it to come alive again. Yea!
