I have a dell Inspiron 5160 with a volare xp5 video card – difficult but not impossible to get XWindows working. I am running successfully under 11.2 what is the best upgrade path to 11.3 to avoid issues with the video – I had to use the text install 11.2 the last time and activate X using sax2 i believe and that is not available on 11.3
So pasha19, sax2 has been removed from openSUSE 11.3 which can make difficult video installs more of a problem. Now, the newer video drivers in openSUSE 11.3 are also working better on a wider selection of video setups. I might suggest you wait a while and see if anything pops up about the Dell Inspiron 5160. Dell laptops are so common I would let others make the plunge first. Also, anyone with success with this laptop needs to post that success here.
Thanks you understand well why I asked in advance. By the way this dell model has 2 video cards the other is more reliable so I need a report from someone with a VOLARE xp5 VIDEO card.

For those reading this concerning V11.2 a text install of gnome properly configured X with no assistance from me. I wanted KDE so I did a text install of KDE and then used SAX2 to configure X.
Is it possible to provide information from the 11.2 configuration to help get this machine correct (software wise) in an 11.3 or later version of opensuse? I believe the video card works as a vesa (framebuffer) 1024 X 768 16 bit color. Would you need some additional hardware information to recognize this configuration of an Inspiron 5160 correctly? PS I tried a late beta version of 11.3 that fails when it tries to start KDE looks like the same X problem as 11.2. By the way this cannot be that far from working out of the box because the 11.2 graphics install worked (install wise) up to the point it tried to start KDE after the install.
If this has potential and there is anything I can do to provide the information I suggest please let me know. – perhaps if the “fail safe” option could use the same X config as the installer?? Or maybe a separate vesa (framebuffer) boot option??
