Hey all. I have 3 pc’s running OpenSuse 11.3. My laptop and main pc, that I did a fresh install on, are running kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop after the last kernel update. My server which I UPGRADED (zypper dup method) from 11.2 is running 2.6.34.12-desktop and never saw the last kernel update. Anyone know what I am missing?
I guess I could manually grab the kernel I want but I was curious why it did not run auto-magically.
Which guess brings up another question: my server runs in level 3 doing a number of tasks ( webserver, samba server, logging firewall msg from router, etc. ) and is never logged into for user purposes. Pretty much I do everything via ssh if I need to config something. Is there a better kernel to run for this purpose than desktop.
Thanks all.
I just looked at my 11.2 machine and the most recent kernel I found for it was 2.6.31.14-7.1 and NOT newer than the 2.6.34.12-desktop version you have installed. Perhaps you ment 11.3 for it as well? So, when you go into YaST GUI, you might check the Versions Tab to see if an update is there, but you could be OK. I do take kernel updates with a grain of sand in that I see updates go wrong or have odd problems. There is something to be said about leaving a working kernel alone.
I have not tried this, but there is a way to run YaST from Terminal, as shown in this example.

As for the best kernel for a Server, you should consider using kernel -Default instead of -Desktop as it is optimized for that server operation. Normally you get both during a kernel install at the same version.
Thank You,
All the machines are running Suse 11.3. The difference is that 2 of them I did a clean install on, and the server I upgraded. But the server is running a differnet kernel than the others. I may have sounded confusing before - sorry.
Yea, if you type yast ( not yast2 ) at the command line as root you will get an ncurses version of yast. It works about the same but you have to “tab” your way around. It works pretty well, I have used it from time to time. There are no kernel updates that way or if I type zypper update. There have been other updates so I know its working in that regard.
Anyway, I am not really stressing over it, I think it has to do with upgrading rather than installing. Like the initial boot screen still looks like the 11.2 but system tells me I am 11.3.
Anyway, thanks for the reply.
