11.3 problems!

  1. just installed opensuse 11.3 on my hp and I got a notification for an update and i installed it and it kept notifying me that kupdateapplet had an error or somthing and it kept doing that until the computer locked up. After i restarted it kept spaming me with errors so i had to reinstall the opensuse 11.3.
now its notifying me to install it again.

Im wondering what is kupdateapplet and why is it repeatedly posting errors ?

2.it says i have no mp3 support and packman is not listed in yast!

3.I cant open /home because opensuse say it has no application to open it with.

I have reinstalled it 2 times then I re burned it and installed it agian but still no mp3 capability or packman repository.

4.should i need to install 6000 series nvidia drivers
or are the defaults the right ones?

right now it says

Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: GeForce 6150SE
2D driver: nouveau
3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)

You have to add the packman repo manually and install mp3 and other codecs yourself. Here is the excellent guide to do this. Just follow the instructions for 11.3:
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide

You should be able to open /home with Dolphin or Konqueror or if you are GNOME user nautilus

You are currently using the open source nvidia drivers which is fine for basic things but if you want desktop effects and things like that install the closed source driver

As for kupdateapplet I don’t use rather use that I use the Online Updates in YaST and that works fine

ok I will just leave the kupdate applet alone .

yes i will be using effects so ill get the 6000 drivers.

I dont understand how to get packman they say to go here Index of /suse/11.3
and there just text and subfolders that i dont understand.

If you follow the instructions in the guide carefully you will notice you need to add packman as a repo then install the codecs then switch the remaining packages to that repo. Here is a direct link to the instructions:
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide

To get the closed source nvidia drivers working on openSUSE 11.3 here is an excellent guide I follow:
Nvidia Installer HOWTO for openSUSE users

And do updates through YaST’s “Online Update” module.

Simple guide here:

openSUSE 11.3 | SUSE Linux | Beginner’s guide to multimedia codecs MP3 DVD 3D nvidia ati wireless

Note the recommendations to have these 3

* Main Repository (OSS)
* Main Repository (NON-OSS)
* Main Update Repository

and for multimedia codecs and packages

*Packman Repository

To add a repo:
1.In your case go here:
Additional package repositories - openSUSE

  1. Select the packman repos make sure to pick the ones for 11.3
3.right click on the 2nd Germany it’s been the best for me.
  2. select & click Copy Link Location
  3. Open Yast select Software Repositories
6.click the Add button in the lower left
7.when the 1st box shows up click the Next
  4. In the Space URL Paste the link you copied in step4
    9.click the Next
  5. then you’ll see the Software Repositories click the OK button
  6. you’ll then see an import key box check to see if it’ from Packman if so click OK

If all has gone well you’ll then have the Packman repo.

For your nvidia problems go here:
Additional package repositories - openSUSE
then do as you did from step 2 onward for the nvidia repos

ok i got packman working finaly, thanks everyone for the help.

thx sagemta, repos are a bit confusing im going to copy that list and save it incase i forget and have to hunt this topic down lol.

Repos are great  just do some reading on them and You’ll realize You can’t live without them. This is a bit more comprehensive but very well written IMHO.
SDB:Zypper usage 11.3 - openSUSE

Best regards,
Greg

thankyou, i will readup on them and hopfully have it down soon.

Hi, I just thought I’d share some help as well:

It used to happen with me too when I first installed openSUSE 11.3. I found that manually installing updates first (through Kickoff Menu –> Online Update) resolved it and updating from the applet after that worked without problems.

2.it says i have no mp3 support and packman is not listed in yast!

Follow the steps here](http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_formats/11.3) to enable mp3 and other restricted formats.

You can enable the Packman repository through Software Repositories –> Add –> Community Repositories –> and then select Packman from the list.

3.I cant open /home because opensuse say it has no application to open it with.

You mean that when you try opening any folder, it doesn’t open? Because if the Home folder doesn’t open and reports a missing file manager, then no folder should open at all. Possibly a faulty install? Try seeing if Dolphin (for KDE) or Nautilus (for Gnome) is installed on your system, using Yast.

4.should i need to install 6000 series nvidia drivers
or are the defaults the right ones?

right now it says

Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: GeForce 6150SE
2D driver: nouveau
3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)

If the defaults are working for you with no problems, and you can run whatever you want without lags or poor graphics performance, then you shouldn’t need to install the proprietary drivers; the default open source nVidia driver is fine.

Desktop effects work perfectly fine with the default free video card driver for me. I’m using an Ati radeon at the moment, but I’m pretty sure that with Nvidia you don’t need to have the proprietary driver just for desktop effects. If you’re a hard-core gamer then – well, that’s another matter

IMHO You may well be wrong. Opensource drivers might allow for desktop effects but they might also not allow for this or might cause other problems (full screen flash seems to be the most common at the time being). I have also encountered situations where the free driver worked for me better than the propriety one in games and for desktop effects as well as playing video. I’ve had the best experience with intel graphic drivers for linux in the ati, nvidia, intel trio in the past (no installation needed at all, everything already included in the kernel or X) but at the moment they are broken and full screen flash doesn’t work with desktop effects turned on using intel driver and it works nice with intellegacy driver. It works like charm with desktop effects turned off using either of the two drivers. What is more the screen flickers from time to time. My lspic -nnk yields the following at the moment :

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device [1043:1862]
        Kernel driver in use: i915
