11.3: pae vs. 64 bit

Hi,

I am going to install 11.3 on a system with a Phenom X6 and 16 GB memory.

I’m now unsure whether to set up a 64 bit system or a 32 bit system with pae.

Are they equivalent what concerns use of the complete 16 GB memory? I assume 64 would be more effective???
On the other hand there seem to be less problems with the availability and/or installation of applications on a 32 bit system.

Can anyone please give me some advice or point me to some respective info?

thanks / regards
paul

I would go with 64 bit.

I have run an 11.2 64 bit system alongside a 11.2 32 bit system ( only 2 GB ram )and found nothing that concerned me.

Why? There are very few apps that actually benefit from a 64bit system. But I agree that a 64bit system does not lack package support as it did a few years ago.

BTW: the “desktop”-Kernel which is installed by default does feature pae, it’s not needed to install an explicit pae-Kernel anymore.

16GB of RAM is unusual for a standard desktop, I assume the OP has a reason for this, any software capable of using 16GB is bound to have a 64bit version.
