11.3 LXDE Painfully Slow

Hi all,

Just finished the 11.3 install. My machine is older so I chose the LXDE desktop. I was running LXDE on 11.2 without a problem.

The problem is the system resources are at 100%. However, when using the task manager I do not see any that are eating 100% of the CPU resources.

Thanks for your help,
Paul

How did you install, clean from DVD or via “zypper dup”?

How old is old ? What Graphic card? What graphic driver ? What CPU speed ? How much RAM ?

Aside from top, what package are you using to assess system resource consumption?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Clean install from 32 bit DVD. The machine is a HP clarion 2g with 1.5g memory and about 6 yrs old. Nop special graphics card, just stock. It ran 11.2 for over a year just fine. Maybe I got a bad DVD burn. I re-downloaded the DVD ISO and will re-burn. It could be a bad burn, however it checked fine and the MDs were correct. I had this happen once before with 11.1.

Let me try to re-install the new burn.

Thx,
Paul

Sorry, I used the LXDE task manager to view the process’s.

If that doesn’t solve it, then we will also need to know the vendor and type of your graphics card/chip and which 11.3 graphics driver is installed/loaded.

OK! Thanks!

In order to help you better, it would make it easier if you could be more specific. 1.5GB RAM is good to know about, but I have NO idea as to what cpu nor what speed cpu is in an HP clarion 2g. I’ve never heard of a “nop special” graphics card. Is this a nVidia? and ATI ? … if so, EXACTLY which make? Which graphic driver are you using?

If you look at this guide: openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users it gives you some hints as to how you can tell what graphic driver you are using.

Maybe ‘top’ (in a terminal) will give you a more reliable idea on what is hogging your resources. Also try ‘iotop’ in case the slow performance is caused by disk-writings.
