11.3 A cut and paste editior I can launch as root from the CLI

Fresh install of openSUSE 11.3 here and I am used to launching Konqueror as root from the CLI and having a cut and paste editor to use. This doesn’t work in KDE 4.4. I can’t launch kwrite from the cli as root. What am I supposed to use? I installed midnight commander but it can’t cut and paste correctly.

I am feeling a bit frustrated with KDE 4.4.

I may be answering my own question apparently KDE 4.X doesn’t think root needs a cut and paste editor. Text only editors only allowed.

If you need root priviledges for GUI editors, then you need to use ‘kdesu’. For example:

kdesu kwrite

Mmmm? I don’t think that’s true.

How exactly are you getting “root”? Exact command, please.

su from a terminal.

Read my previous post.

I read your post and answered his question.

So kdesu is required. I understand that now. This is new information to me.

su has worked for years and years but I guess it wasn’t KDE 4 enought for the KDE developers.

In my experience “kdesu kwrite” was also REQURED for KDE3.

I used Kate up until today and it never was required for Kate. It is now however.

I have a working copy of Firefox now

I had to bring my whole .mozilla folder over from my /backup
Slowly adding in the applications I use enough that they were pinned to my old KDE 3.5 panel.

Dolphin is wonky as heck. This whole “new” desktop is going to take getting adjusted to.

I guess the news reaches some late

FWIW:

kde4 apps won’t run with su on suse 11.0 ?

KDE4 root problems

Konqueror is a good alternative, and can be set as default file manager if you prefer.

Happy learning.

Up until today I have had about 15 minutes exposure to KDE 4. December is coming soon and openSUSE 11.1 will end of life then. I stayed with KDE 3.5 as long as possible I even changed distros for that as a partial reason. I have a lot of work to do. but I have my basic functionality satisfied. Firefox, Thunderbird, Xchat, (S)mplayer. I can get by. I need to install deluge next

nano is installed - it’s an improved version of pico which I have always used in the past as a CLI editor in root.

Note that when using Konsole Ctrl-Shift-C = Ctrl-C and Shift-Insert = Ctrl-V.

I installed mc and used it without the cut and paste. Now I know about kdesu if I don’t forget it in my sleep.

You have to use “su -”. The dash is crucial.

You can also copy and paste in mc, with the mouse.

You have your answer… The Gnome version is gnomesu. AFAICT, it’s the same as typing su at a gnome terminal. Both allow you to edit ‘system’ files with gedit.

mc was behaving badly here and would not let me select and cut but I prefer navagating to the file with konqueror running as root then editing from there. kdesu will allow for that so I am good.

On a different note I kind of miss the ability to set keywords when creating a thread to aid others in searching.

When you start a new thread you can add tags to help with searches. Not sure if you can add later or not - haven’t tried.

You might check out the new function in dolphin that lets you navigate then open a console with the current directory current in the console. Also the console prompt follows the GUI nav. Very cool. To use it add the Terminal button to the tool bar. Settings-Configure Toolbars. When opened the console is attached but you can detach if you like.

Ok I know you are a reticent 4.x user but really konqueror is so last decade

The deal is twofold. Dolphin opens in a tiny window and trying to move it or make it larger is hit or miss, Dolphin doesn’t seem to like to have two or three separate instances open. Konqueror has none of that problem.

I am old school as in old heheheheh

I have almost what I consider a system I can use for daily use like my 11.1 system running 3.5 was. I am waiting on delivery of a 500 gig drive so I can resync /home/flamebait daily and I’ll almost be almost set.
video file previews are not working yet and I think that is the last thing.
