i installed the 11.3 KDE 64 bit version on my acer 7535 and at first everything was fine, now this crazy thing will not shut down.i checked the power settings and i cannot shut down the cpu’s i have no failed messages in the login they are all green. i cannot figure out what happened this was not an issue with 11.2 is it possible to be in the kernel or am i missing a configuration somewhere.this is a acer 7535 aspire AMD athelon 64x2 QL65 processor it has ATI radeon hd3200 graphics card.
From a su - terminal
What happens with
shutdown -h now
It started to shutdown and immediately restarted
I don’t suppose you noticed if this was the case on the kernel at install?
Try rolling back to the beginning and work forward through the kernel releases
I take it you are using kernel-desktop?
If this is a kernel problem can the earlier version be installed, how would i find out.
Look in Yast like this
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/Switcher%20Pics/kernel-versions.png
Keep in mind, that view is QT (KDE)
You can also switch to Multi version, which would let you install all the available versions at once, but it’s easy enough just to go back and work thru them
I cycled through the different kernels but there was no change so i at this point am uncertain what the problem might be
You said:
at first everything was fine,
Explain this. I mean, how long was everything fine for?
Was it shutting down OK at an earlier time?

Just a note: This is not unique to your lap top. My desktop (openSUSE
11.3) will not shutdown either. Its been that way since July 2010. I
have tried everything suggested in this bug. See:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619754
This is also happening on 11.4 MS5 (same machine different drive), it
worked on MS4. I also have 11.2 (different drive also and it shuts down
every time.
One thing I have noted is that everytime the kernel is updated on either
11.3 or 11.4 the first time I do a shutdown, it shuts down correctly.
from then on it fails. If you find a solution please post it.

openSUSE 11.3 (2.6.34.7-0.7-default)|KDE 4.5.5 Release 1|
Intel core2duo 2.5 MHZ,Intel DX48BT2 motherboard|8GB DDR3|
GeForce 8400GS Nvidia 260.19.29|
This is true it shutdown the first time and after that it started having this problem.
I suppose 11.2 is an option
this is just a thought, if i put 11.2 back on and then did an update (the possibility of having the same problem would still exist CORRECT)
If you mean a dup to 11.3
Then probably
Well you are correct, i reloaded 11.2 64 bit the kernel is 26 31 501 this kernel had no shutdown problems at all. i guess i will have to wait until something can be figured out. (but that is what linux is all about having fun and working to make it better ) i will test on some other laptops i have and see if acer is the only one that has this problem.
You could try and accelerate the process of there eventually being a fix by writing a bug report on openSUSE-11.3, with guidance here: openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE you can use your openSUSE username and password when logging on to bugzilla to write the bug report.
I have also a problem with a 64 bit library on a open SuSE 11.3 environment. The installing of the library matplotlib for python causes a memory errror by the QGIS startup. MY computer is a Acer with Turion X2 processor and nvidia geforce card. Without matplotlib the QGIS applications starts normally. Has anyone an idea ?
